Genetic Counselor
REPORTS TO: Supervising Physician & Clinic Practice Supervisor
The Gynecology and Obstetrics Department is seeking a Genetic Counselor to provide excellent quality care and genetic counseling to Maternal Fetal Medicine patients seeking prenatal diagnosis or undergoing invasive procedures for the purpose of prenatal diagnosis. The primary job responsibilities include providing genetic counseling to patients referred for a wide variety of indications such as maternal age, abnormal screening results, abnormal ultrasound findings, family history concerns, pregnancy loss, teratogenic exposures, and infertility. Case preparation for the counseling session may include review of previous pertinent testing results, research regarding the condition of concern and arranging for appropriate testing.
Essential Duties
  • Participates as a team member in case conference in reference to patient care.
  • Timely management of patient caseload including documentation and timely closing of encounters.
  • Provides comprehensive counseling reports and appropriate documentation/reports on each case.
  • Consults with private/referring physicians, residents, fellows, and nursing staff as requested.
  • Provide individualized assistance related to insurance verification/authorization of genetic counseling services.
  • Obtain an appropriate patient medical history and pertinent family members.
  • Coordinates patient care activities and management of clinical data throughout all phases of patient care from initial referral to follow-up.
  • The Genetic Counselor will coordinate testing, which may include prenatal diagnosis, aneuploidy screening, ultrasound, and carrier screening.
  • Arranges for clinical services, evaluates clinical data, participates in clinic rounds, and triages clinical questions/concerns to the appropriate member of the interdisciplinary team. Utilizes both in-person, phone, and video/virtual visit platforms to counsel patients and their partners
  • Calls out CVS and amniocentesis results within a 24-hour period of receipt of results. Calling out any abnormal results to patients and physicians.
  • Communication with maternal-fetal medicine physicians, other medical specialists, referring obstetric providers, various laboratories, and insurance companies is required.
  • The Genetic Counselor will also help in the development of clinic protocols.
  • Assist Revenue Auditors with any billing documentation or charge issues.
  • Analyzes and synthesizes program data.
  • A qualified candidate should have good case management skills.
  • The Genetic Counselor will provide follow-up by contacting the patient and referring providers with test results, documentation of the counseling session and results of testing, and assisting with arrangements for additional consultations or testing.
  • Provides care to special patient populations and patients with diverse cultural backgrounds. Identified patient readiness for learning and ability to follow instructions and give consent.
  • Review patient records and solicit additional records as necessary and appropriate for appointments.
  • Obtain comprehensive family history in form of a Pedigree
  • Provide crisis intervention and referral(s) as needed (pre- and post-natal counseling, when a fetal abnormality is detected, etc.)
  • Extensive patient education face-to-face, by phone, and via video/virtual platforms regarding services provided, treatment details, patients' multi-stop plan of care, lab results interpretation as directed by physician and within the genetic counselor's scope of practice.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must maintain certification by completion of the required CEUs for the period prescribed by the Board.
  • Must seek certification as a genetic counselor from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) within two years of hire date.
  • Master’s Degree from a graduate program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC).
  • Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • One (1) year of genetic counseling experience.
  • Experience in general pediatric or adult genetics clinic a plus.
