Furlong Gallery Assistant & Student Gallery Coordinator

The Furlong Gallery Assistant and Coordinator of the student galleries aids in managing the day-to-day operations these spaces on campus. General responsibilities of the position include assisting the Furlong Director and overseeing the installation and de-installation of all Furlong Gallery and student gallery exhibitions, maintaining lending inventory of the university art collection, overseeing student workers and their schedules, coordinating opening receptions, and ordering supplies and materials for gallery and framing operations. This individual is also involved in the curation of select Furlong Gallery exhibitions and pursues external support through grant writing and partnerships.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum / Required

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office or equivalent
  • Excellent interpersonal, and customer service skills
  • Experience in an art gallery, museum, or collections setting
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Excellent communication skills, including written, verbal and oral

Highly Desired

  • -Work independently and as part of a team environment and on collaborative efforts
  • -Interest in and/or experience with grant writing. This can include experience with short to long documents that include goals, objectives, executive summaries, and/or problem statements.
  • - Minimum of 3 years of hands-on art gallery, museum or collections experience
  • -Familiarity with visual art archiving software
  • -Good work habits such as: attendance, punctuality, accountability, thoroughness, and resourcefulness
  • -B.A. or B.F.A. in visual studies (art, design, curation, or art history)

RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist with the Furlong Gallery (30 %)

  • Maintain Furlong Gallery website
  • Participate in the curation of select exhibitions
  • Help to oversee the installation and de-installation of all Furlong Gallery exhibits
  • Provide framing, technology, and installation services as needed for exhibitions
  • Organize and facilitate opening receptions, which includes the ordering, purchasing, and preparation of supplies, materials, and refreshments.
  • Assist with exhibition season schedule
  • Hire and train student workers to support the Furlong Gallery
  • Coordinate promotions related to exhibitions, educational opportunities, opening receptions, and other public events in the gallery
  • Maintain lending contracts for insurance purposes
  • Oversee safe return of art to exhibiting artists
  • Help provide regular gallery access for students and public throughout the year
  • Maintain gallery space, which includes painting, patching and repair as needed
  • Assist Furlong Gallery Director with the day-to-day operation of the Furlong Gallery

Maintain University Art Collection and Lending Inventory (25%)

  • Regularly research and acquire new works of art for the collection with available funds, in collaboration with Furlong Gallery Director
  • Manage the university art collection
  • Facilitate the lending of artwork across campus with the selection, distribution, installation, and record keeping of the lending inventory
  • Maintain the condition of the artwork through proper archival processes
  • Maintain the digital archive and lending inventory program using archiving software
  • Promote and facilitate access to the collection for research and educational purposes
  • Assist with special projects connected with framing and artwork across UW-Stout's campus
  • Hire and train student workers to support the university collection

Coordinate Student Gallery 209 and other on-campus student exhibition spaces (25% )

  • Create, maintain, and frequently update gallery calendars
  • Hire and train student workers to support installation and de-installation of exhibition spaces
  • Coordinate with BFA, MFA, and Art Education students on the installation and de-installation of their artwork
  • Work with faculty to coordinate BFA thesis exhibition schedules and paperwork
  • Work with faculty/student mentors to coordinate class art exhibitions and displays

Community Outreach, Grant Writing, and Collaboration (15%)

  • Connect with campus and community partners on opportunities for collaborative projects between UW-Stout, the community, and the Furlong Gallery
  • Work with the Arts Administration & Entrepreneurship major on internships and opportunities to support the curriculum and the students in the program.
  • Work with university and community resources (i.e., Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, Community Foundation, etc.) to write grants and seek out external sponsorships for the support of future exhibitions and initiatives for the university art collection, Furlong Gallery, and student exhibition spaces.


DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

The Furlong Gallery is located in Micheels Hall, and is home to both the university art collection and a two-room gallery for the display of work by professional artists and designers, as well as special juried student exhibitions. The university art collection is also housed in the Furlong Gallery facilities, and serves the campus as a lending and educational collection.

Gallery 209 is the School of Art & Design¿s main student gallery, with new shows featured weekly, with work being installed and exhibited by students. This facility supports the BFA in Studio Art, as well as the other programs and courses offered within the School of Art & Design.

The School of Art & Design is comprised of two departments (Art & Art History and Design) and has approximately 85 faculty/staff and 1,200 students, making it the largest public higher education art and design entity in the upper Midwest. There are nine different programs, including Game Design and Development, Graphic & Interactive Design, Animation and Digital Media, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Studio Art, Video Production, Arts Administration and Entrepreneurship, and a graduate-level program in Design.
