Job Summary
This physician oversees behavioral health services provided at Denver City and County Jails. In this role, the physician provides direct clinical care and oversees a team of psychologists, social workers, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. The Director of Forensic Psychiatry also serves as a liaison between the medical department and the Denver Sherriff's Department, conducts forensic evaluations for the courts, and provides subject matter expertise in the area of forensic psychiatry. This physician is part of the Behavioral Health Services department at Denver Health, which has a safety-net mission to provide quality care to everyone regardless of their ability to pay. Additionally, this provider holds a faculty position at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. As such, this physician is responsible for organizing educational and quality improvement activities. Completion of a forensic psychiatry fellowship is preferred. Essential Functions:
  • Works collaboratively, effectively, and respectfully with Denver County Sheriffs and other law enforcement (20%)
  • Physicians at Denver Health are faculty members of the University Of Colorado School Of Medicine serve as teachers for students seeking clinical experience at Denver Health and provide education for post graduate medical trainees. (20%)
  • Provides psychiatric assessment, consultation, and care in Denver City and County and for incarcerated patients in other systems (20%)
  • Conduct effective and thorough risk assessments for violence (20%)

Education:
  • Doctorate Degree Required

Work Experience:
  • 3 years of experience as a psychiatrist preferred.

Licenses:
  • MD-Physician - State Medical Board Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent written and verbal communications, listening, and social skills.
  • EPIC experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required.
  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
  • Able to receive detailed information through oral communications; express or exchange ideas by verbal communications.
  • Has expert knowledge of the intersection of psychiatry and the law
  • Performs in a tactful and professional manner.
  • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and comprehensively with courts, judges, law enforcement, and other professionals outside the healthcare setting both face-to-face and in writing
  • Able to effectively manage and direct medical staff support activities while providing quality medical care.
  • Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment.
  • Able to interact effectively with people of varied educational, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, skill levels and value systems.
