Job Description

This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.

ABOUT STANFORD UNIVERSITY AND RESIDENTIAL & DINING ENTERPRISES:

Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE), the largest auxiliary organization at Stanford University, supports the academic mission of the University by providing high-quality services to students and other members of the university community. The department has an annual operating budget of over $350M, operates 24/7/365, and oversees a $3B asset portfolio comprising a 7 million sq. ft. physical plant across the campus. In autumn quarter of the 2021-22 academic year, R&DE will return to providing housing for over 13,000 students and dependents, serving meals at 17 dining halls, 12 retail locations, and operating athletic concessions and conference operations. Additionally, R&DE comprises 900 FTE staff in the following divisions: Student Housing Operations, Stanford Dining, Stanford Hospitality & Auxiliaries, Stanford Conferences, Maintenance Operations and Capital Projects, and a team of R&DE strategic business partners: Finance & Administration, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Strategic Communications.

This role is designated as essential and requires incumbents to report to work onsite. Telecommuting is not available for this role.

II. Essential Job Functions

  • Projects a professional image always through appearance and dress
  • Provides an excellent dining experience for guests, using interpersonal skills and conflict resolution, and anticipates guest needs.
  • Crumbs table as necessary.
  • Supports other Hospitality and Auxiliaries units as requested.
  • Sets up and break down large function dinner services and elaborate themed dinner programs, complete with food and beverage settings and linen, both on- and off-site
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate respectful and professional behavior by maintaining a positive work environment and interactions with co-workers, management, customers, and visitors.
  • Complies with workplace safety, safe food handling and sanitation standards.
  • Follows RDE work rules, policies, procedures, and core values.
  • Works with food runners to ensure proper guest satisfaction.
  • Assists customers with specific dietary restrictions, and answer questions regarding food ingredients.
  • Provides a fine dining food and beverage service, using established protocols of food and beverage etiquette and service standards.
  • Delivers food and catering equipment for Catering events, performs setting –up, break down and clean-up of all Catering functions.
  • Maintains supplies neat and organized to department standards.

III. Qualifications

  • Demonstrates helpfulness, and respectfulness, is approachable and team oriented, builds strong working relationships, diplomatic, and a positive work environment, is responsible, honest, resolves conflicts appropriately, and is flexible.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible and varied schedule as assigned.
  • Has outstanding listening and communication skills with guests, peers, and management.
  • Follows work directions as assigned by supervisors and managers.
  • Proven track record of punctuality
  • A Banquet Houseman must be able to provide own uniform items of black slacks, black shoes with black socks. Uniform Shirts will be provided.
  • Committed to providing excellent customer service to all customers.
  • Able to plan, prioritizing tasks and customer service needs.
  • Understanding of Silver Service expectations and Principals
  • Subject to wet floors, temperature extremes, excessive noises, and large commercial equipment. As an essential job function, worker is required to use cleaning and sanitizing chemicals.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs and requires you to be on your feet for long periods of time.
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) year fine dining or catering experience within the last two (2) years.

IV. Certifications and Licenses:

  • If handling food, California Food Handler Training Certificate within 90 days of hire.

V. GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to stand for prolonged periods, reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push and pull items. Physical agility critical to perform essential job functions. Lift up to 50 lbs pounds, and must have manual dexterity. Ability to work around hot equipment (stoves, grills, ovens).

VI. English Proficiency Requirements

Must be able to understand and communicate in English with adequate proficiency to follow directions from supervisor, read and understand safety guidelines and directions to prevent accidents or injuries from occurring, and communicate effectively with customers (staff, visitors, students) by listening and speaking clearly to them.

The expected pay for this position is $23.82 (Step 1) per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
