Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Fire Protection (Mechanical or Electrical) Engineer I - V located at Cooper Nuclear Station in Brownville, Nebraska. Position closes November 30, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.

Position Summary

Applicants should have the ability to identify emerging problems and resolution of engineering issues related to Fire Protection, effective management of resources and projects, and a working knowledge of plant systems and operations.


This position may be assigned to a position within the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) that requires response to the station when an emergency is declared. Assignment to one of these positions and a condition of continued employment will be the ability to arrive at the station to perform ERO responsibilities within 45 minutes of notification of an emergency.


Note: Level I to Level V Engineer is considered a progression and is approved by the appropriate manager. Engineering positions are managed under the NPPD Nuclear Engineering Career Path document.

Education, Training and Experience

Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering (ABET Accredited)


Experience in NFPA 805, 10CFR50, Appendix R, Appendix A to BTP 9.5.1, and NFPA Codes and Standards is preferred.


SFPE Member Grade preferred. A working knowledge of power plant engineering. Demonstrated project management abilities, leadership skills, high work standards and good communication skills.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Responsible for maintaining overall reliability, preventive maintenance strategies, long range planning, system performance, and testing of fire protection systems, components and features.


Provide engineering support for operations and maintenance, and technical support of line management for ensuring continued Fire Protection system operational readiness and program effectiveness.


Monitor and trend fire protection systems performance to support effective implementation of the fire protection program.


Identify and manage risk associated with optimum level of compliance with applicable codes and regulations to cost effectively support safe operation, and to foster the trust of the regulator.


Promote continuous system/program improvement by maintaining both an internal focus to remain cognizant of customer needs, and an external focus to identify system/program improvements and emergent issues.


Develop and maintain competency in other programs to ensure adequate program resources to meet plant needs.


Develop and maintain expertise in the codes and regulations associated with the fire protection program.

Salary Information - Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth.

Engineer I, Exempt Pay Grade 12: $6,257 to $7,409 monthly

Engineer II, Exempt Pay Grade 13: $7,017 to $8,310 monthly

Engineer III, Exempt Pay Grade 14: $7,980 to $9,589 monthly

Engineer IV, Exempt Pay Grade 15: $9,157 to $11,003 monthly

Engineer V, Exempt Pay Grade 16: $10,505 to $12,623 monthly


Travel Required: Telecommuting arrangement available following initital training period and satisfactory performance levels
