SUMMARY
Fire Prevention Inspector Is in the Merit System are responsible for conducting building inspections for restaurants, sports arenas, shopping centers, office buildings, and other structures to search for and identify fire hazards and to ensure compliance with international fire codes and ISP standards along with federal, state, and local regulations and requirements. Fire Prevention Inspectors also inspect fire protection, detection, and suppression equipment and systems. Individuals in this job complete fire inspection reports and educate the public on fire safety and prevention and may act as a representative of the fire department to provide fire safety information at public meetings.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Reviews blueprints and plans for new or remodeled buildings to ensure the structures meet fire safety codes during inspections.
  • Inspects buildings to locate hazardous conditions and fire code violations, such as accumulations of combustible material, electrical wiring problems, and inadequate or non-functional fire exits.
  • Plans and schedules work assignments by conducting research, contacting relevant parties via email or phone, and setting up meetings in order to follow established annual inspection requirements for existing buildings and/or meet new construction inspection demands.
  • Conducts fire inspections in existing commercial and municipal buildings and new construction by visually identifying potential fire hazards and ensuring electrical, plumbing, gas, and HVAC systems satisfy local, state, and federal fire hazard and prevention codes in order to comply with relevant fire inspection schedules, laws, and permit codes.
  • Inspects fire protection or fire detection systems to verify that such systems are installed and functioning in accordance with appropriate laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards.
  • Creates fire prevention and inspection reports by documenting code violations, reviewing field notes, and interviewing relevant business persons in order to document potential hazards and ensure they are rectified.
  • Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must be 18 years of age by the closing date of the announcement.
  • Experience writing, interpreting, and maintaining reports and records.
  • Willing to perform work on a construction site (e.g., uneven ground, on roofs, around potential hazards).
  • Driver's license.
  • Experience in customer service (e.g., working through complaints, resolving conflicts, and gaining compliance).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preferred Qualifications are examples of experience and education considered to be highly desirable by hiring agencies.
  • Experience in construction or construction type work (e.g., taking measurements, reading blueprints).
  • Experience in firefighting or conducting pre-fire inspections.
  • Fire Inspector I Certification.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGES:
  • Knowledge of national fire regulations, state and federal laws, court rulings, and legal information.
  • Knowledge of types of fire suppression systems (e.g., sprinkler systems, hood systems, portables) and their functions.
  • Knowledge of building construction, codes (e.g., fire codes, life safety codes, mechanical codes), and building systems (e.g., HVAC).
  • Knowledge of fire prevention techniques and principles.
  • Knowledge of pre-incident/pre-fire planning procedures to include inspecting structures, identifying potential hazards, and establishing paths of egress.
  • Knowledge of types of fire detector systems (e.g., smoke, carbon monoxide) and their functions.
  • Knowledge of the Federal, State and Local fire code (e.g., relating to buildings and facilities).
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Work is primarily performed both in the field either on new construction sites or in and around existing buildings, and in an office setting.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling required to physically inspect new construction and existing buildings for potential fire code violations.
  • May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
