Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.
The Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. This position exists to implement farm and ranch skills at Los Luceros Historic Site. The position also performs required administrative tasks and ensures successful operations of the site. Los Luceros Historic site includes more than 1200 trees, an apple orchard, 70 acres of farmland, three miles of acequia irrigation ditches, and a flock of heritage livestock (churro sheep). The property also includes 12 structures, five of which are on the National Registrar of Historic Places, as well as a thriving bosque along the Rio Grande. This position exists to operate the farm and ranch components of the historic site for the benefit and enjoyment of constituent audiences, develop local partnerships, assist with farm and ranch related interpretive programming, as well as the cultural preservation of traditional agricultural practices of northern New Mexico.

How does it get done?

This position works in collaboration with the Farm and Ranch Supervisor and other site staff to address the following key responsibilities: agriculture and livestock/animal management, including the oversite of heritage crops and animals and supporting strategic agriculture development plans; support of agriculture interpretive programming, including education and public programs and special events and exhibits; operation of farm and ranch related equipment, equipment orders, and maintenance; and following seasonal maintenance plans for all equipment and ensuring the proper inventory and care of all necessary supplies and equipment.

This position serves all visitors to the Los Luceros Historic Site.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year's farm and ranch related experience, including farm animal care and heavy equipment operation and maintenance.

Minimum Qualification

Associate's degree in Agricultural Science, Aquaculture, Animal Science or Wildlife Science, or other closely related field and two (2) years in farm or ranch related experience including basic construction, electrical, and plumbing skills, heavy and farm equipment operation/maintenance, fisheries and/or wildlife habitat management. Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.

Working Conditions

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
Work is performed in a farm and ranch setting with exposure to all seasonal elements and requires extensive periods on heavy equipment. Must be able to lift over 50lbs.
