Job Description

Faculty Lecturer Visiting

Film and Media Studies - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (23003281)

The Film and Media Studies Program at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a Visiting Lecturer or Instructor in Broadcast for the academic year 2023-2024, pending budgetary approval. This position is outside the tenure track and is a fixed-term, one-year contract that runs from September 1, 2023, through April 30, 2024. Note that Fall Term classes start on August 28, 2023. The teaching load is six 3-credit courses per year. We especially welcome applications from candidates of underrepresented groups, whose backgrounds, experience, and approaches contribute to our aims for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Film and Media Studies Program has an expanding and successful film and media production major that has grown out of the program’s longstanding critical studies major. We also have a Television and Broadcast Arts certificate that forty-five students enrolled in during its first year. We have a weekly morning show, Pitt to the Point in the spring semester. Over the past five years, the program has seen an over 100% increase in majors and course enrollments. The program’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion stresses new voices, and new experiences and students and faculty who come from underrepresented backgrounds in film, media, and broadcast production. We have strong teaching, mentoring, and filmmaking collaborations with high schools in underserved areas of the city and strong partnerships with a burgeoning local film industry. Our production major offers hands-on professional training in the context of a broad liberal arts education. Our broadcast courses take advantage of the training opportunities at Pitt Studio’s state-of-the-art facilities.

We seek candidates who can teach a variety of introductory and advanced courses in live broadcast production and on-air journalism. Our new colleague demonstrates a commitment to teaching that integrates hands-on instruction in media practice with critical approaches to film and media that emphasize theoretical, historical, and aesthetic perspectives. An ability to teach broadcast emphasizing the intersection of technical production skills, storytelling skills, sports knowledge, journalism practices, and the history and theory of moving image media is especially welcome.

Minimum requirements:

  • BA/BFA degree in a broadcast or related field (instructor level)

or

  • Experience with switchers, replay systems, and graphics systems
  • A BA/BFA in another field and at least 1 year of live broadcast production experience (instructor level) and
  • Knowledge of sports or live sports production
  • Experience with on-air studio equipment (cameras, lights, audio)

Preferred requirements in addition to the above:

  • MFA, Ph.D., or terminal degree in broadcast or related field (lecturer level)
  • Experience with Grass Valley Switchers, DreamCatcher Replay System, and XPression Graphics System
  • 3 years with live broadcast production
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite
  • At least 1-year teaching live broadcast production or on-air journalism in a post-secondary setting

Apply by uploading a letter of application, a current CV, a diversity statement, a list of three recommenders we can contact for letters, and optionally a link to a demo reel. The diversity statement should address your contributions to diversity through creative work, teaching, service, and/or community engagement. Applicants should share how their past, planned, or potential contributions or experiences relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion will advance the University of Pittsburgh’s commitment to inclusive excellence.

The review of dossiers will begin on June 1, 2023, and continue until the position is filled.
