Job Description
Based in southeast Nebraska, this position is part of a team of Agricultural Economists working throughout Nebraska addressing issues of local, regional, and statewide importance to ranchers and farmers. Primary responsibilities are developing and delivering a coordinated, proactive and effective extension program in Nebraska in livestock and crop production system economics that a) improves profitability and sustainability, b) enhances resiliency to cyclical swings in production input costs and market prices, c) expands producer awareness and confidence in using risk and strategic management tools, and d) assists livestock and crop producers in applying financial management and marketing strategies that will enable them to improve their economic decision making. The incumbent is an active participant in developing solution-based scholarly resources as a member of the state-wide Agricultural Economics/Farm and Ranch Management team and a key member of the Center for Agriculture Profitability (CAP).
This twelve-month, non-tenure track position carries the title of extension instructor or open rank extension educator, depending on the candidate’s level of education. Those possessing a graduate level degree in the requested area of instruction will be considered for an open rank educator position, a full-time, promotable, non-tenure track appointment. Those in possession of an undergraduate degree in the requested area of instruction, will be considered for an instructor position, a full-time, non-promotable, non-tenure track appointment that will be renewed annually for a maximum of five years in the appointment. If hired as an instructor, the incumbent will be expected to make satisfactory progress toward and complete a master’s degree within the initial five-year appointment period. As part of the UNL benefit package, the University offers tuition remission for full-time employees, up to 15 credit hours per year. Once the master’s degree is earned within that period, the position will advance to an assistant extension educator appointment.

PROGRAMMATIC RESPONSIBILITIES (approximately 80%)
  • Collaborates closely in a multi-disciplinary team environment with colleagues across academic units, state and federal agencies, industry representatives, and livestock and crop producers, delivering programming in livestock and crop production system economics that optimize profitability and improve probability of success of these operations.
  • Uses innovative strategies and cutting-edge teaching and learning methods to design, develop, deliver and evaluate programs for a robust extension education program focused economic dimensions of livestock and cropping production systems within the assigned geographic region, and as a member of the statewide agricultural economics team.
  • Actively participates in the Center for Agricultural Profitability (CAP), addressing short and long-term issues focused on economic viability of livestock and crop operations and other timely issue where outcomes would benefit from an agricultural economics component.
  • Conducts needs assessments, identifies priorities, measures program impact, and reports results at professional meetings, in professional publications, and other scholarly outlets.
  • Participates in professional development to enhance and maintain professional expertise in agricultural economics and extension pedagogy/andragogy.
  • Participates in collection and interpretation of data to develop decision tools and management strategies for clientele that are focused on innovative and emerging trends in agricultural production systems.
  • Identifies needs and provides access to educational opportunities within the assigned geographic region, working to include underserved or under-represented populations in agriculture in educational programming.
  • Uses entrepreneurial practices to secure grants, contracts, program fees, and partnerships to leverage the extension educational program’s resource base and to extend the reach and impact of these programs.
  • Develops, delivers, and measures impacts of programs and engagements that integrate economic, financial/risk management, marketing, and policy aspects of decision-making that increase the profitability and resiliency of Nebraska livestock and crop production systems.
  • Engages in a collaborative-learning environment with livestock and crop producers, partners with faculty in applied research efforts, and encourages adoption of research-based information in decision-making.


Organizational Citizenship (approximately 20%)
  • Cooperates with faculty and staff in a team environment to promote Extension’s educational opportunities and impact in the academic/administrative unit and statewide.

  • Supports engagement of advisory or policy groups such as unit advisory committees, program advisory committees, and others as appropriate.
  • Serves in, contributes to, or supports the academic/administrative unit. Coordinates with Unit Head/Director/Program Leaders and other Extension professionals, on campus and statewide as appropriate, to develop a robust Nebraska Extension presence.

Some travel is required. Must meet driver standards according to UNL policy and have a valid driver’s license.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics or a closely related field (extension instructor) OR Master’s degree in agricultural economics, or a closely related field (extension educator).
  • Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders in writing, verbally, or online media.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the development and use of enterprise budgeting techniques, farm and ranch production recordkeeping, or financial management systems.
  • Understanding of different ethnic and socioeconomic audiences or a commitment to developing and delivering both inclusive and targeted programming to assist underserved audiences.
  • Experience teaching in a formal or non-formal setting for students, adults, and/or stakeholders focused on the economics of agricultural production.
  • Familiarity with livestock or crop production systems in Nebraska.
  • Understanding of or experience developing and delivering extension programs focused on farm management issues.
