Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Develops, organizes and conducts individualized exercise programs for cardiac patients to improve cardiovascular fitness and encourage home-based exercise continuation. In doing so, develops exercise programs based on participants' needs, arranges logistics of classes, conducts programs and classes, monitors participant during programs, and provides participants with educational material.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following duties and responsibilities are all essential job functions, as defined by the
ADA, except those that begin with the word "May.")

1. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served. This includes knowledge of the physical and psychological needs of patients served and the ability to respond appropriately to those needs.

2. Plans, organizes and conducts a variety of individual and group exercise programs for cardiac rehabilitation patients enrolled in a three phase rehabilitation program. Ensures appropriate exercise program is provided depending on patient’s assigned phase.

3. Trains patients in performing exercises correctly to ensure maximum results. Works individually with patients to assist them in learning correct exercise techniques.

4. Monitors patients during individual exercise programs via EKG monitoring and taking vital signs, assesses patient physical condition, and adjusts exercise program accordingly.

5. Working with treatment team members, provides case management by instructing patients regarding exercise programs, providing personal consultations, preparing documentation for inclusion in patients' medical records, and so forth.

6. Trains and oversees work of department interns. Acts as a resource in resolving complex equipment problems and/or exercise program issues.

7. Educates patients on anatomy, physiology, risk factor modification and the like.

8. Reviews and updates materials used in program to ensure it reflects current developments in the treatment and rehabilitation of cardiac rehabilitation patients.

8. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related conferences, seminars and the like.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an exercise science or a related field (e.g. Kinesiology or Physical Education). Emphasis in exercise physiology preferred. No previous experience required but preferred.
  • Required Education and/or Experience:
    • Bachelor of Science degree in an exercise science or a related field (e.g. Kinesiology or Physical Education). Emphasis in exercise physiology preferred. No previous experience required but preferred.
  • Current CPR Certification issued by either American Heart Association or Red Cross
  • Required Education and/or Experience:
    • Current CPR Certification issued by either American Heart Association or Red Cross

Preferred Education and/or Experience:

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
