Job Description
What To Expect
The Ergonomist as member of the Ergonomics manufacturing shared services team based at the Fremont Factory, focuses on setting the right conditions of work – from hiring and training, to manufacturing and production – such that all Tesla employees are able to achieve and sustain healthy, high performance work. What does this mean? It means this individual is not content with just eliminating the risk of injury but goes further to help ensure healthy, high human performance is “designed-in” to the human-work system. This individual will support management of change, advocates the designing-in of work system feedback loops, works to accommodate a wide range of people both physically and mentally and designs in ways to build fatigue recovery into all human-based work. This individual also pays particular attention to the interaction of humans and automated equipment including robots. The Ergonomist is expected to properly apply semi-quantitative and advanced risk assessment tools with a high degree of proficiency, demonstrate a clear understanding of function allocation (in the context of job design), and have a polished comfort in both facilitating gemba problem-solving and building ergonomics competency in others. In addition, this individual will be expected to communicate recommendations in a bright and brief way to employees at all levels in the company.
What You’ll Do
  • Through gemba and rigorous problem-solving, collaboratively design workplace solutions to support lean manufacturing engineering improvement with high focus on human work task interaction;
  • Connect with Production, Engineering, Operations, Facilities, Workplace, Human Resources and other Tesla support teams to evaluate, and change if necessary, new product/ process/ facility designs to ensure both routine and non-routine human work results in healthy, high performance (e.g., perform digital human modelling of facility, workstation, product and process to solve for human performance and reduce physical injury risk);
  • Perform ergonomics and equipment safety risk assessments and facilitate the design of solutions such that human performance risk is reduced as much as feasible (management of change) for existing product design, process design, equipment and facility;
  • Be a positive change agent by getting the right stuff done!
  • Coach/ mentor/ train others in ergonomics engineering and work system safety design;
  • Evaluate, amend, and set into place manufacturing work standards and instructions to ensure best ergonomics work-practices are contained within and demonstrated;
  • Participate, leading on occasion, incident analysis to determine and make visible injury and near hit root causes, including corrective and preventative fixes, following the hierarchy of controls, to prevent incident reoccurrence;
  • Measuring physical task parameters (using tape measure, scales, stopwatch, & force gauges;
  • Recommend changes in policies, procedures, work environment and equipment to prevent incidents and illnesses and to overall enable healthy human high performance;
What You’ll Bring
  • Well organized with meticulous attention to detail;
  • A capability in delivering quality 5Why and Fishbone (6M) problem-solving;
  • Mastery of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Confluence, JIRA, and SharePoint.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Automotive manufacturing/ assembly experience preferred;
  • Associate Ergonomics Professional (AEP) certification through the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE) or equivalent work experienced preferred;
  • 2-3 year of experience or equivalent in a similar manufacturing/industrial environment;
  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering, Ergonomics, Occupational Health and Safety, or equivalent (Master’s degree preferred);
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines;
  • Experience with the development and implementation, including delivery, of training and education;
  • An understanding of lean manufacturing concepts;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • An awareness of ergonomics and Digital Human Modelling;
  • A building comfort troubleshooting equipment design to prevent acute safety injuries (i.e., understands stopping distances, physical guarding impacts, energy control, etc.).
  • Ability to provide support on 3 different sites within the Bay Area;

  • Expected Compensation
    $70,400 - $240,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
    Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
