Job Description

The Division of Waste Management, a division of the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, is seeking an Environmental Scientist to join our team. Summary of Work

This position works with the Solid Waste Program in the Division of Waste Management. The Solid Waste Program (SWP) works with owners and operators of land disposal facilities to ensure that all regulated solid waste activities in North Dakota are conducted in compliance with North Dakota's Solid Waste Management Rules. The SWP requires that all land disposal activities are protective of public health and preserve water resources while promoting resource recovery.

The program also conducts operator training and certification for landfill staff for day-to-day operations of land disposal facilities.

Responsibilities of the position include:

  • Conducting facility inspections.
  • Assist in review of plans, specifications and reports.
  • Input and analysis of data collected and received for the program database.
  • Compliance assessment and tracking.
  • Provide technical assistance to facility owners and operators regarding the state rules and regulations.
  • Assist in collection of water and soil samples for field and laboratory testing.
  • Responding to citizen complaints.
  • Coordinating environmental assessments and cleanups.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for this position, you must have a bachelor’s degree in either environmental, natural, or physical science, engineering, or a closely related field. Starting salary is $4,003+/month, depending on experience.

For well qualified applicants, the department will consider filling the position as an Environmental Scientist II which requires a bachelor’s degree in the natural or physical sciences and one year of related professional level experience. A master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one year of work experience. Starting salary for an Environmental Scientist II is $4,780+/month, depending on experience.
