Job Description

The Division of Waste Management, a division of the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, is seeking an Environmental Engineer to join our team. Summary of Work

This position works with the Solid Waste Program in the Division of Waste Management. The Solid Waste Program (SWP) works with owners and operators of land disposal facilities to ensure that all regulated solid waste activities in North Dakota are conducted in compliance with North Dakota's Solid Waste Management Rules. The SWP requires that all land disposal activities are protective of public health and preserve water resources while promoting resource recovery.

The program also conducts operator training and certification for landfill staff for day-to-day operations of land disposal facilities.

Responsibilities of the position include:

  • Engineering review of plans, specifications and reports.
  • Provide technical assistance to facility owners and operators regarding the state rules and regulations.
  • Responding to citizen complaints.
  • Assist in collection of water and soil samples for field and laboratory testing.
  • Compliance assessment and tracking.
  • Conducting facility inspections.
  • Assist in emergency response.
  • Assistance with enforcement actions.
  • Coordinating environmental assessments and cleanups.
  • Input and analysis of data collected and received for the program database.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a bachelor’s degree in environmental, civil, geological, mechanical, electrical, petroleum or chemical engineering.

Starting salary is $4,780+/month, depending on experience.
