Job Description

General Summary:
The Endoscopy Technician is responsible for the set up of all equipment prior to all procedures and will ensure that the equipment is functional. They are also responsible for high-level disinfection of ancillary equipment and supplies used during endoscopic procedures in accordance to infection control guidelines. During a colonoscopy, the technician may be asked to manipulate the outer abdominal wall of a patient, to facilitate advancement of the video endoscope instrument through the intestine. The Endoscopy Technician is also responsible for patient safety during other types of GI procedures. The primary role of the Endoscopy Technician is to assist physicians with endoscopic procedures.

Main Responsibilities:
Endoscopy Technologist
  • Test equipment prior to procedure to ensure that it is in proper working order
  • Assembles the necessary equipment and supplies according to type of procedure performed
  • Respect patient’s rights to privacy, dignity and confidentiality
  • Cleans scopes after each use and prepares them for processing as well as appropriate storage of endoscopy scopes
  • Perform necessary set-up of procedure room; instrumentation, equipment, sterile solutions, etc.
  • Assist in connecting patient to cardiac monitor: B/P cuff, EKG leads, Pulse Oximeter
  • Performs computer entry of patient during exam while maintaining confidentiality
  • Ensure equipment is serviced
  • Assist in providing a safe and efficient environment for all endoscopy patients and physicians
  • Recognized legal and policy limits of individual responsibility
  • Monitor and change DSD equipment
  • Set up for and assists with patient examinations and therapeutic procedures.
  • Assist with housekeeping duties as necessary to provide a safe environment
  • Demonstrates proper use of all endoscopy equipment
  • Participates as delegated in various committee functions
  • Knowledge of specimen preparation, labeling and handling
  • Participates in departmental conferences, orientation of new personnel and in service programs as assigned
  • Maintains cleanliness and safety of a variety of equipment, reports any hazardous equipment and seeks repairs when necessary
  • Participates in cross-training to other departments
  • Assist with ordering and stocking of supplies in preparation for case load
  • Transport patients and equipment
  • Act as first assist to Surgical Technician as needed under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager and Registered Nurse; indirect supervision from Physician
  • Assist in positioning the patient on the procedure table and cover with sterile surgical drapes

Education/Experience/Knowledge:
  • Current CPR certification and capable of initiating cardio-pulmonary resuscitation in times of emergency
  • Surgical Assisting preferred
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Knowledge of principles of sterile technique
  • 5 years satisfactory previous employment as Endoscopy Technician preferred.

Marginal: Must be able to remain in a stationary position at least 25% of the time. Medium work that includes moving objects up to 50 pounds occasionally and/or 20lbs frequently, and/or 10lbs constantly. Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. Work independently and identify potentially more effective methods of work operations. Observing an area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point. Ability to identify and distinguish colors.
