Job Description

JOB PURPOSE OR MISSION: Administers first aid treatment or basic life support care to sick or injured persons in pre-hospital settings and during transport between campuses in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and hospital policies. Performs job duties appropriately for the age population served as defined in the department’s scope of service.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

JOB FUNCTIONS

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to:

1. Administers first aid treatment or basic life support care to sick or injured persons in pre-hospital settings.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
  • Responds to emergency and on-emergency calls calmly, efficiently, and promptly.
  • Functions in uncommon situations with the understanding of stress response and methods to ensure personal well-being.
  • Assess the nature and extent of injury or illness to establish and prioritize medical procedures that follow.
  • Understands body substance isolation.
  • Recognizes the need to administer basic life support to patients at the scene, en route to the hospital and in any pre-hospital setting in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Functions with the understanding of medical-legal principals associated with emergency care.

  • Open and maintain an airway, as well as, ventilating patients while assisting the paramedic.
  • Provide and manage care of basic trauma including the use of splints and spinal immobilization.
  • Administer oxygen or oral glucose when indicated, utilizing standing orders as provided on the appropriate protocol or use of medical direction.
  • Treating patient at the scene, en route to the hospital, and in any pre-hospital setting in accordance with federal, state, local laws, regulations, and standards and in accordance with Baton Rouge General Policies and guidelines.
  • Complete patient care forms, insurance forms, and all other forms in a competent and timely manner.
  • Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

2. Operates emergency vehicle.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
  • Decontaminates the ambulance following treatment of any patient.
  • Functions with knowledge of stretcher operations and proper lifting techniques.
  • Determines that the vehicle is in proper mechanical condition by checking items required by service management and in accordance with federal, state, local laws, regulations and standards; and in accordance with Baton Rouge General policies and guidelines.
  • Ensures the ambulance is clean, washed, and kept in a neat, orderly condition.
  • Checks, restocks, and maintains inventory on the ambulance each shift.
  • Operates emergency vehicle in a safe manner and with controlled speed, in accordance with federal, state, local laws, regulations and standards; and in accordance with Baton Rouge General policies and guidelines.
  • Coordinates requests for non-emergent transports in accordance with dispatch guidelines.
  • Monitor communication equipment to maintain contact and promptly respond to instructions and calls given by dispatcher.

3. Perform additional responsibilities and routine tasks as needed.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
  • Representing the organization while on duty at public events.
  • Will perform additional duties as assigned to allow for smooth and efficient operation of Baton Rouge General Ambulance Transport Service.
  • Will work in the ED in the role of an Emergency Room Technician (EMT) as needed.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
1 year experience as EMT.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or GED preferred.

SPECIAL SKILL, LICENSE AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
Nationally certified EMT, State of Louisiana Licensed EMT
Valid LA Class D Chauffer’s License
BLS-Basic Life Support
Crisis Prevention training (within 6 months of hire)
Physically capable of performing job
Clean driving record
Knowledge of LA traffic laws and proper driving techniques. Some prior knowledge of layout of assigned territory preferred.
Able to understand and carry out instructions; able to comprehend and follow traffic signs. Able to transport assigned materials from building to vehicle and vice-versa. Dependable and motivated to complete duties without constant supervision.

HIPAA REQUIREMENTS:
Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable HIPAA regulations appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Medical records without limitation both paper and electronic, patient demographics, lab and radiology results, patient information related to surgery or appointment schedules, information related to patient location, religious beliefs and/or public health records, medical records related to quality/data, patient financial information and/or 3rd party billing, patient-related complaints, research information, employee health records and/or employee prescriptions.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety practices appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Incident reporting, PPE, exposure control plans, hand washing, environment of care, patient identification, administers medications, validates, transports, monitors or observes patients for procedures including infusion pumps, and monitors clinical alarms.
