The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The Hydropower and Water Systems Deployment group within the Energy Conversion and Storage Systems (ECaSS) Center is focused on engineering, validation, integration, and commercialization for marine energy and hydropower systems, as well as research to explore the optimal performance of renewable energy supported water treatment and delivery systems. Staff in Hydro & Water Systems have broad expertise, and include mechanical, electrical, systems, and ocean engineers, policy and regulatory analysts, technicians, commercialization experts, and project managers.
Hydro & Water Systems is looking for an Electronics Research Technician. This position will be on-site at the Flatiron campus location near Boulder, Colorado.
The primary responsibilities will include:
  • Intermediate instrumentation and controls experience
  • Ability and willingness to work over-time when required.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Electrical Standard Practice
  • Ability to prepare documentation to produce traceable information paths including instrument calibration, system engineering, and CAD drawings
  • Travel required to offsite projects (>25%)
  • Ability to work 100% on-site
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Electronic troubleshooting techniques and familiarity with the specific test and measurement equipment
  • Data acquisition systems experience
  • Ability to adhere to set working hours required from Monday through Friday.
  • Working knowledge of electronic circuitry, components, and test equipment.

Basic Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Full knowledge of specialized focused support functions. Complete acquaintance with and understanding of the general and detailed aspects of the supported activities, and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered. Proficient in research techniques and practices. Solid communication, interpersonal, project management and customer relations skills.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Must have a professional and courteous demeanor.
  • Basic computer skills and Microsoft software suite skills.
  • Must be able to interact and communicate well with other technicians, engineers, and scientists.
  • Must have the ability to work suspended and at heights on testing apparatus.
  • Good written, verbal, team, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Intermediate skills in research techniques and practices.
  • Team player
  • Understands and applies QA/QC procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with heavy equipment including aerial lifts, overhead cranes, scissor lifts, forklifts telehandler, etc.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to operate computers, tools, equipment, and vehicles Sufficient flexibility to bend, twist and reach as to load and unload equipment, supplies or tools
  • Experience in mechanical fabrication and assembly a plus
  • Candidate must have or be able to qualify for a TWIC Card
  • Willingness to learn about marine energy validation and testing activities
  • Experience with the working dynamics in a shipyard and aboard seagoing vessels

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Research Technician III / Annual Salary Range: $54,000 - $89,100
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
