Seattle Parks & Recreation Facilities Division is seeking an Electrician Technician Apprentice for our Electrical Unit. This is a four (4) year entry level apprenticeship program which provides a structure to achieve the knowledge and job experience to qualify for a journey-level position. Apprentices are required to attend up to 40-80 hours per month of non-paid time in classes and homework in the community college or technical college environment.


Apprentices will be required to learn all aspects of the journey-level position which will include working at heights, on ladders, boom trucks and in confined spaces. Apprentices assist in a series of on-the-job projects designed to educate and develop journey-level expertise in each of the significant categories of the trade. This includes (but is not limited to) comprehensive skills, knowledge of safe work practices, use of basic hand & power tools, diagnosing and repairing malfunctions in electrical equipment, installing light fixtures, power outlets, heaters, rewiring existing electrical installations, and installing temporary power systems for special events. As the apprentice’s level of experience increases so will the levels of responsibility. Formal supplemental training will take place in the classroom with some consideration for some personal studying time and a broader exposure to departmental training (On the Job Training). This position is represented by IBEW, Local 46.


The Facilities Division places a strong emphasis on providing excellent customer service to the public, clients and staff as well as helping to ensure public safety and enjoyment while they are at SPR facilities and parks.


We are currently recruiting for one (1) regular, benefited position on the Day Shift between the hours of 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on a 4-day, 10-hour shift.

Job Responsibilities

  • May assist in troubleshooting systems which include some electronics.
  • Assist in Diagnosing and repairing malfunctions in electrical equipment or control systems such as boilers, pumps, lift stations, generators, air compressors, frequency drives, fire alarms, and indoor/outdoor lighting.
  • Assist in installing lighting fixtures, power outlets, control devices, heaters, thermostats, computer cables, or cathodic protection equipment.
  • Assist in purchasing electrical supplies or parts from vendors, warehouse, or distributors.
  • Assist in conducting preventative maintenance on electrical and electronic equipment.
  • Assist in installing temporary power systems for special events.
  • Assist in coordinating work activities with other trades crews and other city departments.
  • Assist in working with computerized systems such as HVAC control systems and Irrigation control systems.
  • Assist in using utility locating equipment to locate and mark park’s owned utilities.
  • Assists in Energy Conservation Projects including boiler and lighting projects.
  • Assist in estimating and requisitioning materials for work activities; maintaining records of job time and materials used.
  • Assist in running conduit and pulling wire for new and/or existing electrical installations.
  • Assist in changing lamps in fluorescent, incandescent, LED, and H.I.D. fixtures.
  • Assist in reviewing blueprints, electrical schematics, project plans, and specifications of electrical equipment installations.
  • Assist in modifying or rewiring existing electrical installations.
  • Stage equipment and materials for journey level electricians.
  • Maintain a clean working environment.
  • Assist in maintaining job status updates through online work order system.
  • Maintaining equipment.
  • Perform other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
  • Procuring materials for the shop and/or job site.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Must be a minimum of 18 years old. High school graduate from a school accredited by a State Education Agency; or GED certificate (Official transcript must show courses and grades); or High School Equivalency; or an associate degree or higher from a school accredited by a State Education Agency; and show evidence of successful completion of one (1) full year of high school Algebra with a passing grade of “C” or better. Applicants who have not completed one full year of high school algebra with a passing grade of “C” or better, may qualify under one of the following:

1. Equivalent post high school algebra course(s) with a grade of “C” or
better.
2. Current math placement results from a community college facility
indicating a placement level beyond high school level algebra.
3. Provide certificate of completion from a committee approved online tech
math course.
4. Evidence of completing the NJTAC course with a minimum score of 75%.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

License, Certification, and Other Requirements

  • Successful candidates must provide a copy of military records (DD-214) to the PSE JATC, if any, at the time of admission.
  • A current, valid WA state driver’s license.

You will be most successful in this position if you have:

  • Willingness to work both independently and as a team member in a high-volume unit.
  • Possess customer service skills.
  • Strong technical aptitude to use work order/asset management system, Microsoft Office Suite, or other computer databases.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly motivated and a self-starter.
  • Experience working with hand and portable power tools.
  • Experience working with the skilled trades.
  • Ability to take direction from a variety of journey level workers.
  • Strong math skills.
  • Willingness to work in an adverse environment.
  • Possess some mechanical skills and/or training.
Willingness to make a four (4) year commitment to apprenticeship program, which includes at least 4 hours per week of supplemental training during non-work hours.

Work Environment/Physical Demands/Other:

  • Works occasionally with electrically energized lines when power cannot be disconnected.
  • Physically and mentally able to safely perform or learn to safely perform essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Occasionally requires handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances.
  • Frequently required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Work at heights with ladders/articulating lifts up to 125’, boom trucks, or on scaffolding.
  • Required to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • May work in confined spaces.
  • Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • Dependent on business needs, candidates may be required to obtain a respirator clearance fit test.
  • May work near heavy equipment.
  • May be required to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays.

Job offers are contingent upon successfully passing the Electrical Training ALLIANCE Aptitude Test, if not done so already. Candidates who do not qualify for Direct Interview or Direct Entry must receive a minimum passing score. Inside Wireman applicants must obtain a score of five (5) or higher. Candidates failing to obtain a minimum score of five (5) may not retest for a period of six (6) months.


**Job offers are also contingent upon successfully passing a pre-employment physical, results showing a Negative NON-DOT (urine panel 5 or 10) required by UBC JATC, a review of criminal history, driving record and reference checks. In compliance with Seattle’s Fair Chance Employment Ordinance, SMC 14.17, applicants will be provided an opportunity to explain or correct background information.

**All approved candidates for this position will be required to perform working tests as a portion of the hiring process.

**Note: Apprentice pay increases will be based upon specified percentages, acquired skills, and class and job training evaluations.

Current Washington State driver's license. A current, "FULL" driving abstract from the Department of Licensing submitted upon offer of employment. Candidates with a driving history that does not meet our current safety standards will be disqualified from consideration. Current City of Seattle Employees in a driving position may be required to submit an updated abstract.

The full salary range for this position is $29.89 – 42.38 per hour.
