Job Description
SUMMARY OF POSITION

Election judges are essential to our democracy. Serving as an election judge provides an opportunity to learn more about the election process and is a great service to our community.
To encourage participation, state law allows individuals to take time off from work, without penalty of loss of wages, to serve as an election judge.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Official Duties
On Election Day you may be expected to:
  • Operate voting equipment
  • Set up the polling place
  • Demonstrate how to vote
  • Register voters
  • Assist voters
  • Close and pack up the polling place
  • Determine results after polls close
  • Ensure all qualified voters are permitted to vote
  • Greet and direct voters
  • Distribute ballots to voters

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications
To serve as an election judge you must:
  • Complete 2 hours of training
  • Be a United States citizen
  • Be a Minnesota resident
  • Not have had your voting rights revoked
  • Be able to read, write, and speak English
  • Be appointed by the City Council
You cannot be:
  • Domiciled, either permanently or temporarily, with any candidate on the ballot at that election
  • A candidate on the ballot at that election
  • The spouse, parent, step-parent, child, step-child, sibling, step-sibling of any election judge serving at the same time in the same precinct
