Job Description
SUMMARY: The Education Specialist plans and coordinates educational programs and services for those living with ALS and family members. Provides community outreach and coordination of educational opportunities with professionals and providers within the service area territory. Conducts surveys and gathers feedback from those living with ALS, caregivers, and attendees to develop ongoing educational programs.


Duties And Responsibilities


  • Ensure the database is used consistently and established standard operating procedures are followed within the territory.
  • Maintains current knowledge of ALS, research, care techniques, equipment options, and new technology that may improve the quality of life for those living with ALS.
  • Communicate with the care services staff regularly by documenting group attendance in a timely manner and relaying any care needs/resources needed by group participants.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Care Services to evaluate care services programs for effectiveness and desired outcomes and to offer recommendations concerning current or future programs.
  • Conduct surveys to gather feedback from participants on all group programs as well as regular follow-up and interaction with participants.
  • Participates in continuing education seminars, workshops, and conferences as available and necessary.
  • Ensure reports, including statistical, outcome, and other metrics are accurate and timely.
  • Conduct specialized care consultations and needs assessments for people living with ALS, caregivers, and families in a variety of settings including virtual visits by phone/email, in clinic, at support groups, and at home visits, when appropriate
  • Collaborate with Communications and Marketing Department in the development of flyers, emails, and other promotional materials and social media posts.
  • Facilitate resource and support group meetings, engage participants, and schedule speakers as appropriate to meet the needs of the group.
  • Provide information on services and resources and printed/electronic educational materials available to persons living with ALS and their families.
  • Work with the Director of Care Services and Managing Director of Care Services to identify and resolve operational and service barriers within the territory.
  • Outreach and coordination of educational opportunities with professionals and providers within the service area territory
  • Acts as a representative of the Association, sharing information with participants and families as well as professionals and other community providers.
  • Planning, logistics, and coordination of educational webinars, support groups, resource groups, and caregiver labs/workshops (in-person and virtual) for persons living with ALS, family, and professionals.


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Ability to work independently with little supervision; must be a self-starter.
  • Knowledge of general healthcare policies, health insurance programs, Medicare, VA benefits and Community Health Services/Aging program
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Salesforce and/or database experience.
  • Knowledge of ALS, symptom management techniques and community resources and services available for additional support is a plus, not a requirement.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience with chronic disease management, assistive technology, end-of-life, and hospice care.
  • Ability to assess both physical and psychosocial needs of individuals and family members.
  • Ability to create and maintain a safe environment where participants’ thoughts and feelings are valued, and group members are treated with fairness, equity, and respect.
  • Master’s Degree (MSW) in Social Work, LSW or LCSW preferred; or a related degree in social work, health administration, education, public health nursing or related field with experience, will be considered.
  • Able to handle confidential information and maintain high confidentiality.
  • 2-5 years’ experience of related professional experience such as facilitating support groups, planning educational programs, and evaluating programs for effectiveness.
  • Ability to document group participation in database and maintain accurate documentation and interactions.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends for educational programs, Association business, care services events and development events.
  • Display a strong work ethic, personal integrity, and empathy.
  • Ability to drive locally and travel nationally on Association business is required.
  • Strong listening skills and effective communication skills and ability to redirect and facilitate group discussions.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position may include supervisory responsibilities such as the management of vendor relationships, healthcare providers, outreach volunteers/workers and committee meetings.

Pay Transparency: The ALS Association’s pay range for this position is $54,064 - $60,504 annually


The ALS Association has compensation ranges for various work locations throughout the United States, allowing us to compensate employees competitively and consistently in diverse geographic markets. The above-listed listed range shows prospective compensation for this role; the appropriate range will be established by what is eventually determined to be the candidate's primary work location. Various factors, including the complexity and significance of the role, job duties/requirements, relevant experience and abilities, and primary work location, determine individual compensation. Compensation ranges are evaluated and typically adjusted on a regular basis. Offers are made within the compensation range that is in effect at the time of the job offer.


The Association may, at its discretion, offer merit-based increases tied to individual performance. The benefits listed may differ depending on employment status with the Association. Healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan with employer match, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, well-being benefits, paid time off and several paid holidays are available to Association employees, among other benefits.
