The Greenville News/greenvilleonline.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK is seeking a a reporter to cover education and family issues, a key beat for a newsroom that serves readers as a watchdog over Greenville County Schools, South Carolina’s largest public school system.
With over 500,000 residents, Greenville County is the largest county in SC. Over 70,000 people have moved to the city of Greenville in the last 10 years. The city has gained around six new households, every week, over the last 10 years.
With growth showing no signs of stopping, our area features a blend of longtime residents and new families. This reporter would have the ability to reach that wide audience with compelling stories that affect families, especially on topics where education, religion and social issues intersect.
This reporter will also report on Clemson University, SC’s second-largest public university, located in nearby Anderson County.

- Source development is critical to the beat, including county school boards, administrators, teachers, parents and students.
- Equity and inclusion are central to our reporting.
- Serve as a watchdog of Greenville County Schools and report on topical issues related to families.
- Be expected to consistently break news about new schools and leadership changes and developments. Look for trends in SC education before others see them and examine how they impacts the lives of students, parents and teachers.
- All of our reporters handle occasional general assignments and breaking news.
- Be expected to write both quick turn stories on education news of the day as well as more in-depth enterprise stories and longer-term investigations.
- We expect anyone who works with us to be constantly improving their skills. We offer a robust Gannett-wide training program.
Responsibilities:
- Provide great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
- Work with a content coach and digital partners to evaluate what's working and what's not and develop ongoing plans to better satisfy audience needs.
- Promote personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the institutional brand.
- Collaborate with photographers to provide all appropriate elements for stories. Capture basic photos and video as needed.
- Provide thoughtful analysis of complex issues that affect residents and families.
- Connect with the community through storytelling.
- Work toward becoming the community’s leading voice in Greenville County education reporting.
- Experience shooting and editing photos and video on an iPhone.
- Proficiency on social media platforms; including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Reddit and experience engaging readers in this public space.
- Pre-employment background check and urinalysis drug screen required.
- Ability to work collaboratively and efficiently with a team of journalists.
- Strong writing, spelling and grammar skills and knowledge of AP style.
- This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
- College degree in communications, journalism or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Energetic self-starter and a fast thinker who can spot stories that matter.
- Ability to multitask and excel in a fast-paced environment under deadline pressure.
- Strong communication skills, news judgment and headline-writing ability.
