Job Description
About this role:


The Editor, MTaPS, is a member of the Editorial Team in the Communications Department. Under the guidance of the Senior Manager of Communication Services, the Editor, MTaPS, supports the team with substantive editing, copyediting, proofreading, formatting, and project tracking for documents produced by MSH’s MTaPS program. This includes assisting in the preparation of quality documents through reorganization, rewrites of passages, and accommodating non-native English writers.


The Editor, MTaPS, adjusts quickly to shifting priorities and last-minute requests to meet team goals. They are responsible for tracking their projects through the workflow and helping the Communications team stay on deadline.


What are the main responsibilities?


Editorial Support – 70%


  • Provide full backstopping for the editorial team, including activity management and editorial services, and assist with non-MTaPS documents as time permits.
  • Perform substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading of assigned documents, including technical documents, project reports, data analyses, project work plans, and blogs/news stories for MSH’s MTaPS program.
  • Work with authors on document preparation and schedules, stay within budgetary guidelines, and meet all deadlines from the raw copy stage through publication and distribution.
  • Review queries and edits with the author and ensure that any changes made in a portion of the manuscript are reflected throughout the entire document.
  • Be familiar with MSH and MTaPS-specific style guides and participate in developing, revising, and implementing quality control mechanisms and guidelines.


Administrative Support – 15%


  • Attend regular MTaPS project team meetings and brief the rest of the editorial team on upcoming document submissions.
  • Maintain integrity of electronic files of administrative and manuscript files.
  • Support the Senior Manager with processing new editorial requests, including following up with submitters on missing/incomplete information and flagging priority documents for immediate attention.
  • Help maintain the project tracking database, including following up on upcoming and missed deadlines by authors or communications team members.


Formatting – 15%


  • Be familiar with MSH and MTaPS-specific branding guidelines.
  • Review and comment on draft designs for covers, posters, slides, etc.
  • Format documents using existing Word, PowerPoint, and InDesign templates.

Specific requirements for this role are:


Education:


Required: BA/BS


Preferred: BA/BS in English or related field


Experience:


Required: At least five years of related editorial experience. Experience with all levels of editing (i.e., substantive, copyediting, proofreading) for technical documents, including project reports, data analyses, project work plans, journal articles, and blogs/news stories. Ability to accurately proofread and review documents for layout and formatting consistency.


Preferred: Experience in health care/public health/global development. Experience editing writing by non-native English speakers. Experience editing in other software programs, including content management systems (e.g., WordPress, Drupal) desirable.


Knowledge and Skills:


  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style required.
  • Demonstrated organizational, planning, and time management skills. Independent judgment is required to plan, prioritize, and organize a diverse workload while maintaining consistent, quality performance standards.
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills, including writing clearly and concisely, and copy editing for style and grammar.
  • Ability to accurately proofread and review documents for layout and formatting consistency.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Experience working in SharePoint, and Teams preferred. Basic formatting skills (Word, InDesign, PowerPoint) needed.
  • Ability to set priorities, accomplish tasks and meet deadlines, and keep colleagues informed of progress.
  • Additional language skills in French, Spanish, and/or Portuguese are preferred.

The expected salary range for this position is: $54,000.00 - $70,000.00 annually (U.S. locations only).
