Your role at GEI.



GEI’s Green Bay, WI is seeking an Ecological Intern. The ideal candidate will have relevant experience in natural history, ecology, or environmental science and will be comfortable working in a variety of field conditions. S/he will use and maintain equipment, vehicles, and power tools, and will use technology (GPS, field tablets, computer) to document activities. This position requires an introductory level of skill and experience. Projects will involve field labor and technical knowledge/work.


Essential Responsibilities & Duties


  • Traveling throughout Wisconsin and Illinois, likely including multiple nights per week out of town working at remote locations and to work irregular hours (30-55 hours per week, with overtime pay for more than 40 hours a week).
  • Conduct herbicide application to invasive species, knowledge of invasive plant species, and treatment methods.
  • Assisting with wetland delineations and other ecological field investigations
  • Assist with the construction and implementation of ecological restoration projects including but not limited to—native tree and shrub planting, seeding, erosion control measures, etc.
  • Collecting data with a hand-held GPS collector for use with ArcGIS
  • Preparing reports and other project-related documents
  • Identification of native plants and knowledge of native plant communities
  • Work under physically demanding conditions in variable weather and sometimes difficult terrain.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to obtain Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License for herbicide application, preference will be given to those who already have license.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Strong technical writing and report preparation skills.
  • 40-hr OSHA HAZWOPER training preferred.
  • Comfort with working outdoors in remote areas in heat, cold, and wet conditions.
  • Pursuing BS in Biological Sciences, Natural Resources, or Ecological-related studies
  • Ability to perform fieldwork, including assignments with overnight or extended travel.
  • Willingness to cross-train as needed to support environmental remediation, geotechnical engineering, and geology-driven projects.
  • Knowledge of Wisconsin natural history, especially vegetation and wetlands.


Desired Qualifications


  • Ability to identify native and non-native plant and animal species.
  • Experience with computers and Microsoft Office software.
  • Drive and operation of trucks with trailers, ATVs/UTVs tractors w/ attachments, skid steers, chainsaws, brush cutters, and small engines/pumps.
  • Ability to work well independently and with a diverse, multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment.
  • GPS/ArcGIS experience is a plus.
  • Positive, flexible, team-oriented attitude, with the willingness and desire to work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Standard First Aid, CPR, and Pesticide Applicator's License are preferred.
