DEFINITION:
This teaching position is within the career and technical education discipline, specifically early childhood education, under the human services career cluster. Teaching and learning occur within a classroom/laboratory setting, offsite for work-based learning, and potentially within a virtual or hybrid environment when applicable. The early childhood education instructional program integrates academic and technical content while providing real-world experiences. The teacher ensures work is performed professionally and within full compliance with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) competencies for the Early Childhood courses (19153). The early childhood education teacher organizes rigorous, relevant, and engaging educational options and opportunities that support each student’s college, career, and civic readiness journey.

SUPERVISION:
The Early Childhood Education teacher is supervised by Norfolk Technical Center’s site coordinator and other school division administrators from the Career and Technical Education office.

NATURE OF THE POSITION/DUTIES:
  • Establishes and maintains an environment conducive to positive teacher/student relations; promotes an environment which respects and values diverse student populations. Collaborates with colleagues and administrators to promote an enriching school environment.
  • Participates in sponsoring Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) activities and competitions (local, state, national). Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities.
  • Instruct students in safely and properly using related tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Teaches skills, knowledge, standards, and competencies for courses related to early childhood education to students using the curriculum approved by the local school division, the Virginia Department of Education, national-related associations, and other governing and accrediting organizations.
  • Plans and implements instruction within the early childhood education program that entails lectures, demonstration, project-based learning, and hands-on learning experiences within a theory classroom and laboratory setting. Ensures that the instruction strongly aligns with real-world learning, leading to a student’s participation in industry credentialing (license).
  • Communicates regularly with parents/guardians and provides opportunities for involvement within the program. Maintains contact with related staff in support of student and program success.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities focused on remaining current within the field. Participates in local and state committees.
  • Establishes and maintains productive relationships with area businesses, industries, higher education, and agencies by organizing an advisory committee for the early childhood education program. Works with the administration to develop partnerships for work-based learning experiences.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to take the initiative and effectively carry our program tasks to a high degree and accurately complete required reports with limited supervision.
  • Bachelor’s degree in the related field, preferred.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of current assessment strategies. Familiar with related industry certifications for early childhood education.
  • Eligible for or possessing the applicable licensure from the Virginia Department of Education.
  • Experience in working effectively with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of the subject to be taught. Knowledgeable of related content, skills, and processes.
  • Minimum three years of experience in the field of early childhood education or related area.
  • Demonstrates understanding of developmental theories/stages related to the secondary-level student.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of technology and program-related equipment and tools.
  • Demonstrates considerable knowledge of the principles and methodologies of effective teaching. Ability to facilitate student learning within various instructional formats such as in-person, hybrid, or virtual.
  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively interact and establish a positive rapport with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates the ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Potential above-average amount of walking, bending, standing, stooping, and lifting in a laboratory/classroom.

HAZARDS:
Work involves exposure to normal, everyday risks.

UNUSUAL DEMANDS:
Work is performed in laboratory/classroom with some off-site requirements for student work-based learning. Some travel may be required for professional development and program (student) events. May be required to work within a flexible format to include in-person, hybrid, or virtual.
