In partnership with AbilityOne, Palmetto Goodwill Services manages numerous government contracts that provide employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Under the supervision of Goodwill, individuals with severe disabilities are able to enter the workforce and become independent, self-sufficient members of the community.

Summary
Responsible for operating an automobile or light truck to deliver messages, documents, packages, and mail to various business concerns or governmental agencies, perform miscellaneous errands, such as carrying mail to and from the post office and sorting or opening incoming and outgoing mail. The Driver Courier may obtain receipts for articles delivered and keep a log of items received and delivered and deliver items to offices and departments within an establishment. Follows clearly detailed procedures in performing repetitive tasks in the same sequence, including, but not limited to, filing pre-coded documents in chronological order, and operating a variety of office equipment (e.g., mimeograph, photocopier, addressograph, mailing machine, etc.).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Accurately and efficiently sorts mail and makes mail pickups and deliveries.
  • Assists in training assigned individuals in all phases of a mail center operations.
  • Receive and document courier packages.
  • Ensures distribution of mail is accepted by authorized official military/government personnel.
  • Completes appropriate computer data entry.
  • Responsible for ensuring equipment and supplies are used, maintained, stored, and replaced properly; ensure safe operation at all times.
  • Advises patrons on the applicable postal service and Federal regulations.
  • Operates motor vehicles (van or station wagon) on a regular and routine basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Obtains receipts for articles delivered and keeps a log of mail-related items received and delivered; delivers items to offices and departments within an establishment.
  • Obtains signatures from recipients of special delivery mail.
  • Maintains quality standards and safely performs duties while providing excellent customer service.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly work environment.
  • Provides security for all mail during deliveries.
  • Maintains and generates necessary records required by the contract as well as those required by Goodwill for mail services.
  • Responsible for performance of safety drills and keeping the work site within OSHA standards.
  • Daily delivery, pickup and carrying mail to and from assigned stops.

Qualifications
  • Operate manual and mechanized postal center equipment.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Obtain and maintain the required security clearance as stipulated by contract.
  • Enthusiasm for the mission of the organization.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Multi-task effectively; be able to adjust to frequent changes, delays or unexpected events; be flexible and/or adaptable as work requirements change.
  • Possess management skills, with focus on the ability to handle multiple projects needs simultaneously.
  • Work effectively in a team-based environment.
  • Prior experience working with a diverse population, including individuals with challenges and disabilities preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Thrive in a dynamic, fast-moving environment.
  • Meet deadlines; be self-directed and able to work autonomously/independently as needed.
  • Work days as documented in the latest contract agreement for business needs.
  • Prepare, arrange, or stack items together for safety and neatness.
  • Data entry skills preferred.
  • Proficient writing skills, with focus on correct style, grammar, and content.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Successfully carry out essential functions of position while working autonomously and with limited supervision. Must be trustworthy and possess a high degree of honesty.
  • Function in a military setting.
  • Recognize and report items of poor or unacceptable quality.
  • Possess a valid SC Driver's License and automobile insurance acceptable to Goodwill's liability insurance carrier.
  • Prior experience working on military installations preferred.

Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent. Must have a current, valid SC Driver’s License, as well as prior driving experience.
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is:

  • Frequently required to reach with arms; lift, maneuver, and move 70 pound cartons.
  • Continuously required to: sit; walk; talk; hear; use hands and fingers to handle and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms above shoulders.
  • Regularly required to safely operate manual and powered equipment.
  • Frequently required to hear in order to respond to internal paging system and warning devices.
  • Frequently required to use close and peripheral vision in order to visually check postal documents.
