Summary


We are looking for someone with a student, partnership, and community-focused engagement mindset to lead our Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI). As the Director, you will report to the Vice Provost for Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer and play an important role in our continued efforts to provide an academic and culturally diverse community, promote academic success, and encourage student engagement in multicultural leadership and education. Our work focuses on co-curricular programming for undergraduate students, student support and large-scale multicultural events management. Responsibilities*


  • Monitor and evaluate progress towards OAMI’s goals and objectives.
  • Lead the team through myriad work modalities while supporting a strong work-life balance and positive work culture.
  • Provide for an environment that is collaborative, high functioning, and where the team feels valued and recognized.
  • Provide strategic leadership for program development and implementation of university facing and student facing campus-wide programs.
  • Lead and develop a talented team of 15 permanent staff, plus more than 60 undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Define and guide our vision, mission, goals and priorities.
  • Select, manage, develop, mentor and evaluate direct reports.
  • Work with Marketing to develop and execute upon digital, social media, and other marketing methods to expand services and visibility to diverse populations.
  • Develop and manage the budget, ensure stewardship of funds and work with development colleagues to engage new donors with the goals of sustainability and growth.
  • Collaborate with the academic units, student life, enrollment office, state departments and community partners to recruit, develop, and retain students.
  • Align and prioritize resources to meet deliverables while ensuring accountability; infuse this approach through the organization.
  • Provide overall leadership in managing OAMI’s programs related to student leadership development, student success, community engagement, diversity programming and education.
  • Build and support a continuous improvement culture across the programs including the use of data and trends.
  • Partner with student organizations to promote diversity programming and education by aligning the vision and daily operations to the University’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) 2.0 Strategic plan initiatives and the University of Michigan’s Vision 2034.
  • Understand the landscape of underrepresented student needs and align programs and resources.
  • Set team direction, manage performance expectations and continuous improvement.
  • Align financial resources with our mission, staffing with strategic directions.

Required Qualifications*


  • Demonstrated proficiency in working across a complex organization and with a wide range of people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.
  • 3+ years experience leading and managing a team.
  • 8+ years of experience managing student-focused academic programs including strategic planning, partnership development and student success components.
  • Expert proficiency in developing, designing and managing large-scale events.
  • Expertise in contemporary issues related to student success and a deep commitment to promoting educational equity for all students, particularly those who have been traditionally marginalized.
  • Bachelor's degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in fiscal management, including grants, and funding development.
