Job Description

Director of Production

Vector Surgical™ is an award winning medical device company. Small yet dynamic, we are growing quickly and looking for an outstanding individual for our Director of Production role. The Director of Production is a key leader in our company, ensuring that high quality sterile medical devices are ready to ship daily.You will plan, coordinate, and manage manufacturing (both internal and contract manufacturing), material control, assembly, and engineering to ensure a continuous supply of high quality, timely products.The Director of Production will analyze and implement improved methods to increase efficiency and product quality while controlling costs. You will establish and launch new, scaled-up production of products as they transition from R&D to Production.Mastery of medical device manufacturing, regulatory requirements, and clean room operations is essential.This is a “hands-on” position, fully engaged with the team, as together you generate outstanding products.Positive, optimistic, high-energy dedication to the work is fundamental to success. You will have the unique opportunity to optimize our new site by designing the overall layout, and specifying equipment, storage, and operations.

The position is 100% on site; day shift; Monday-Friday.

Responsibilities

Manage Production Schedule to Ensure Timely, Quality Product

  • Ensure that high-quality, timely product is continuously available for shipping. Manage the schedule of the raw material procurement, production, assembly, and shipping of products.

Hands-On Supervision of Production Operations

  • Organize and schedule staff, equipment, tools and materials for optimal operations; manage logistics.
  • Engage directly in management of Production operations and shipping, while leading a strong, motivated team to consistently meet or exceed goals for high quality, efficiently produced, on-time shipments.
  • Create positive work environment through motivation and support of staff. Physically engage in the work, assisting the staff as needed.
  • Ensure all safety practices are established, documented, trained, implemented, and recorded.
  • Establish objectives and provide ongoing feedback through performance reviews and development plans. Mentor, train and support team members and monitor performance.

Oversee Management of Suppliers and Contract Manufacturers

  • Management of sterile product and clean room manufacturing.Monitoring of bioburden and maintaining product sterility.
  • Manage raw material suppliers, including sourcing and qualifying suppliers, auditing suppliers, tracking performance, and addressing issues.
  • Ensure positive, professional relationships with contract manufacturers. Track performance, perform audits, create audit schedule, and provide ongoing feedback.Respond to concerns and requests, to build a long- term relationship of trust and respect.
  • Ensure duplicate suppliers for all critical functions and materials.
  • Direct operations and procurement to meet budget objectives.Prepare and submit operating budgets for approval.
  • Set Production objectives; track progress to objectives.Foster a team-based orientation toward achieving operational metrics.
  • Lead continuous improvement activities in quality, efficiency, cost, and safety.Develop and implement plans to decrease COGS.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure all Production operations, employees, facility and equipment adhere to all regulations. Uphold all aspects of the Quality System that are related to Production.
  • Monitor training status of all employees and staff to ensure full compliance with regulations.
  • Stay up-to-date on medical device manufacturing regulations.

Manage Facility and Equipment

  • Source and implement software systems to raise efficiency and accuracy of schedule management and other aspects of production.
  • Plan, organize, schedule, and direct the design, maintenance, construction, renovation, and repair of organization facilities and equipment.
  • Recommend the acquisition of new equipment to improve business performance. Qualify all equipment to meet regulatory standards.
  • Establish new clean room for assembly, including creating SOPs, work procedures, and forms to support proper implementation.Train employees on proper use.
  • Analyze and improve factory layout, tooling, and storage methods. Ensure space and facility are at capacity to support projected production volumes. Ensure that utility systems (HVAC, water, electrical) are fully operational and that preventive maintenance schedules are followed. Work with vendors to maintain facility.

Provide Organizational Leadership

  • Interact with Sales, Research & Development, New Product Development, Administration, and other critical areas of the business to coordinate and resolve production related issues.
  • Serve as a key leader of the organization.Teach generously and engage with others positively.Contribute insights about the business overall as a member of the executive team.Establish collegial relationships with all team members. Contribute to the culture of high performance, accountability and positive engagement.


Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a medical device manufacturing environment, including 5 years managing others.
  • Established success demonstrating strong analytic skills, including: report writing, oral presentation, quantitative analysis, and use of graphics to express data.Ability to perform math functions such as ratios, percentiles, and simple statistics.
  • Engineering or business degree required; chemical engineering is a plus.
  • Exemplary track record of success managing medical device production.

Expertise

  • General knowledge of warehouse and manufacturing equipment.
  • Track record of success in scaling up new product manufacturing from R&D into Production.
  • Mastery of Quality Management Systems and medical device regulations; thorough understanding of medical device manufacturing.Six Sigma Black Belt required.
  • Understanding of maintaining product sterility, including monitoring bioburden and contracting for sterility validations.Mastery of clean room operations.
  • IT savvy regarding production and quality related software systems.Proficient with MS Excel, Word, Outlook; familiarity with inventory management systems and electronic Quality Systems.
  • Specific experience mixing and handling liquids or chemicals is a plus.

Physical

  • The Director of Production is expected to come to work ready for minor/moderate physical activity on a daily basis; this is not strictly a “desk job.”Occasionally lifting and/or moving up to ~30 pounds is required.Eagerness to engage in a physically active manner is expected.
