Job Description

Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club is the oldest conservation, education and recreation organization in the United States. The AMC promotes the protection, enjoyment, and wise use of the mountains, rivers and trails of the Appalachian region. The AMC encourages the involvement of all people in its mission and activities, through its membership, programs, policies, and procedures.


The Director of Communications leads the strategic development and execution of AMC’s external and internal communications. They are responsible for overseeing all facets of the organization’s brand and communications efforts to position the organization as a leader in outdoor recreation, conservation and education. This is accomplished through collaborating with key stakeholders across the organization, including marketing, development, conservation, and programs to tell compelling stories that resonate with AMC’s audiences and expand the organization’s reach.


This is a remote position, with preference given to those who live in the New England territory as site visits in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York and upstate New Jersey may be necessary.


Primary Responsibilities:

Branding

  • Create strong teamwork with the Director of Digital Marketing to ensure alignment on initiatives with consistent messaging across all communications channels.
  • Design and execute AMC’s communications strategy, coordinated across departments, toward enhancing brand visibility, expanding funding, and reinforcing marketing efforts to achieve organization’s goals.
  • Manage creative assets and articulate the “voice” of the organization, reflecting and protecting the brand and mission across all digital, print, and media platforms.
  • Partner in the development and execution of a cohesive social media strategy for the CEO that effectively leverages existing social media properties and consistently evaluates new opportunities to engage audiences through social media.

Content Creation

  • Develop communications to launch and support partnership and sponsorship opportunities across internal and external channels.
  • Direct outstanding writing and content development that elevates the brand and supports the mission, vision and values of the organization while capturing AMC’s voice in a genuine, engaging way.
  • Oversee all internal and organizational communication efforts including internal newsletters, company meetings and other key employee communications initiatives.

Public Relations/Media

  • Assure the development of a proactive media relations effort to identify and leverage key relationships to grow brand awareness and effectively manage crises

Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to successfully accomplish multiple tasks without direct supervision, required.
  • Enthusiasm for and commitment to AMC programs and mission is required, including working with employees, visitors, and AMC constituents.
  • 8-10 years of experience in communications, public relations, digital media, or similar
  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation and information communications skills with an ability to adapt communication style for the situation
  • Experience leading, motivating, and mentoring a team of direct reports
  • Proven experience and leadership in managing comprehensive strategic communications, media relations, thought leadership, and public affairs to advance an organization’s mission
  • Flexibility to attend off-site and weekend meetings as needed.
  • Demonstrated success implementing vision and strategy as well as execution with staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, partners, and other constituents
  • Physical Abilities required: Work is performed in a standard office setting, using standard office equipment.
