Job Description

Chester United Methodist Church seeks a Director of Christian Formation (DCF) role that's full-time (30+ hours) with access to benefits. We’re a growing church in central VA that emphasizes embracing diversity, loving families, and making a positive impact in our community. The DCF would coordinate, collaborate, and plan ministries with children, youth, and families while promoting outreach, discipleship and leadership. Director of Christian Formation at Chester UMC

Summary:

The Director of Christian Formation is a full-time, salaried position who coordinates, collaborates, and plans ministries with Nursery (ages

0-4), Children (ages 4-12), youth (13-18), young adults, and families.

Essential Functions: (each of equal priority)

● Coordinate monthly events promoting discipleship and outreach among children, youth, young adults, and families.

● Coordinate weekly small groups for young adults, parents, youth, and children.

● Recruit and Nurture laity leadership and volunteers in children, youth, and family ministries.

● Develop annual age appropriate formation moments (first Bible, first

Communion, Confirmation, Baptism, Graduation).

● Establish annual/periodic opportunities for children and youth to participate in hands-on missions, volunteerism, spiritual-development, and advocating justice.

● Collaborate in planning Vacation Bible School.

● Engage in relationships outside of church with community members.

● Form relationships with Teachers, Parents, and Students of

Preschool.

Other Responsibilities:

● Support and encourage volunteers.

● Attend Staff Meetings and Collaborate Ministries of Chester UMC.

● Attend and build relationships within Scouting Ministries.

● Oversee Safe-Sanctuaries training, implementation, and compliance.

● Suggest literature and direction for small groups.

● Leadership- envisions objectives and goals, breaks work down into process steps, plans, develops schedules and task/people assignments.

● Adaptability- willing to change and evolve to meet each contextual challenge.

● Relatable- excels in working with people, inside and outside the congregation; builds rapport, keeps appropriate boundaries, is a team player.

● Conflict Management- sees problems as opportunities, reads situations quickly, listens attentively, and uses a wide variety of responses including directing, collaborating, and compromising.

● Curiosity/Creativity- sees the world with wonder, lives in questions, imagination, and creativity; filled with child-like love for humor, exploration, and risk-taking.

Minimum Qualifications:

● Strong commitment to Christ, the Lead Pastor, Vision, and overall ministry of Chester United Methodist Church.

● Supports and grows in understanding of the theology and polity of the

United Methodist Church.

● Strong Work Ethic (reliable, dependable, and punctual).

● Exhibits professionalism and civility at all times as a part of our team.

● Certified in CPR.

● Pass Background Check regularly and/or as needed.

Physical Requirements:

● Able to lift and care for small children.
