Job Description
Position Summary
The Tax Director of Income Tax will be responsible for coordinating and supporting Tax Provision and Tax Compliance functions on behalf of the Samsung Electronics America, Inc. and Subsidiaries’ North American Group (SEA) and will directly report to the North American Headquarters Head of Tax with focused efforts to achieve our Corporate Tax Strategy to take a sustainable approach to taxes which is commercially driven, responsible and transparent. Responsibilities also include various facets to support tax operations matters involving internal non-income tax compliance reporting, proactive business consultation and planning, tax strategy implementation, tax risk assessment and mitigation, optimizing tax incentives, and providing leadership to Tax Department senior management in order to accomplish these imperatives.
Also, this role will provide assistance and support with the development and supervision of assigned Tax Department tax managers and staff to ensure adherence to departmental timelines, maintain compliance procedures and controls. Continual interaction and collaboration with SEA finance, legal, HR, distribution, and other shared departments, Samsung affiliates, external financial auditors, tax providers and with Samsung’s South Korea Corporate Headquarters’ Tax Department. Experienced tax department professionals and outside advisors will support and report into this position. With inspiration from our Samsung corporate strategies and interactive organizational training, this role will foster Tax Director leadership to support ensuring best-in-class outcomes through continuous engagement with key stakeholders and developing self, team, and organization.
Role and Responsibilities
Tax Compliance
  • Develop and implement strategic tax planning for all necessary federal and state taxes.
  • Oversee and assure compliance with all outside of the U.S. tax return obligations and tax payments, ensuring all international entity tax compliance (US tax withholding and FBAR) is completed and filed timely.
  • Assist with the co-sourcing and review of the Company’s federal, state, and local tax returns prepared by a public accounting firm and their assigned personnel.
  • Plan for and develop an overall return calendar and coordinate timing and inputs with the tax team.
  • Ensure accurate, timely filing of consolidated federal, state, and local income tax returns and other business-related filings.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory tax law developments, communicate the effects of these developments to management and the tax team and create strategies to capitalize on changes to taxation legislation.
Experience with federal 1099 Reporting requirements a plus
Financial Reporting
  • Ensure strong internal control environment around documentation and implementation of accounting policies.
  • Works with outside tax advisors on key strategic projects and tax planning initiatives, as required
  • Ensure all income tax information is adequately prepared and presented within regulatory filings, including financial statement disclosures.
  • Liaise with internal and external auditors and provide support for special tax-related projects
  • Review assumptions used and calculation of tax liability for all corporate entities on a consolidated and standalone basis.
  • Manage and assess uncertain tax position and determine reserve requirements; draft memorandum substantiating any related financial statement impact in accordance with IAS 12
  • Assist with the review of the quarterly and annual tax provisions which are prepared by a public accounting firm provider and their assigned team on an IFRS basis.
  • Supervisory ResponsibilitiesWill supervise, train and mentor Tax Managers and Senior Tax professionals with their tax compliance and reporting responsibilities. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and correcting employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.Assist in the planning and budgeting process by providing assumptions and estimated tax amounts for the Company’s annual budget.
Skills and Qualifications
Software
  • Experience with tax research databases such as Checkpoint, CCH and BNA
  • Experience required with OneSource Income Tax and Tax Provision
  • Familiarity with Power BI, Tableau and Alteryx a plus
  • Experience required with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat

  • Developing and implementing goals, objectives and practices for effective, efficient and cost effective management of allocated resources.
  • Researching, analyzing and evaluating new tax saving methods, procedures and programs.
  • Responding to inquiries or complaints from federal and state regulatory agencies.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Train other team members.
  • Reading, analyzing, interpreting and applying financial and tax manuals, accounting journals, financial reports, legal documents, and federal, state and local tax related laws, codes and regulations.
  • Ability to effectively delegate work as needed.
  • Knowledge of transfer pricing frameworks and methodologies a plus
  • Demonstrating professionalism through a positive and cooperative attitude and by maintaining the confidential and proprietary nature of work products.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Incumbents in this class are subject to extended periods of sitting, standing and walking, vision to monitor, moderate noise levels and periodic business travel. Work is performed in an office environment.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance with CPA license, Masters in Tax or JD with LLM in Taxation preferred. Minimum twelve years of progressive experience in public accounting and/or multinational corporate tax department. Strong technical knowledge with experience covering a broad range of complex U.S. Federal, State and International tax matters. Must have in-depth knowledge of IFRS tax accounting rules and pronouncements. Must have intermediate/advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Excel. Requires strong business acumen and analytical skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills and a proven record of the highest level of personal integrity. Requires a least 10 years of supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to generate team engagement, collaboration, development, credibility and commitment. Extensive experience with tax compliance, tax accounting, financial reporting, tax audits and controversy, tax advisement and internal and external stakeholder management. Must be a team player and possess a strong dedication to providing quality service. Must be attentive to detail, accuracy, and the ability to use judgment to make sound decisions. Must have strong organizational skills and the ability to take ownership and work autonomously. The ability to be flexibility and work to meet regulatory and internal deadlines is imperative
Compensation for this role for a candidate based in New Jersey is expected to be between $238,000 and $247,500 but may be higher or lower in other regions due to geographic differentials in the labor market. Actual pay will be determined considering factors such as relevant skills and experience, and comparison to other employees in the role.
