Job Description

The Smithsonian Institution is currently seeking an experienced Digital Content Manager, as a part of the Smithsonian Journeys team to focus on website production, supporting social media efforts, digital marketing projects and reporting.


RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:


Website Producer

•Manage website production, collaborating with the SJ Department Coordinator in publishing content to the SJ website. Content is provided from third-party tour operators and internal teams, working closely with SJ Program Managers, SJ Editor and Writer.

•Keep pricing, maps, billboards, galleries, imagery, and copy up to date and refreshed when needed.

•Review back and front end of website for accuracy (maps, activity descriptions, accommodations, ships, dates, and more).

•Manage process for ongoing updates of tour and landing pages as well as specific updates required for marketing promotions.

•Identify opportunities and make recommendations to improve website user experience and work with marketing team on future site redesigns or enhancements. Act as liaison with SE Digital team in identifying costs associated with changes and with VP Marketing in budgeting for any changes.

•Deliver detailed monthly reporting on website metrics, working with Sr Manager, Audience Development and Marketing Analytics.


Social Media Marketing

•Manage and execute social media plans and develop editorial calendars

•Generate, edit, and share regular social content (original text, images, video) to build meaningful connections and encourage community members to engage, work closely with SJ Editor and Writer

•Deliver detailed monthly reporting on social data/metrics, and provide insights, recommendations, and best practices for improving our reach and metrics

•Moderate user-generated social content in line with policy.

•Work with external agency to coordinate paid social ads (imagery and posts) and to analyze and improve paid social results


Paid Digital Advertising

•Manage paid digital advertising relationship and budget with external agency and contribute to the strategy working with VP, Marketing and the digital marketing team.

•Working with the agency and the SJ marketing team, execute tests, collect/analyze data, identify trends/insights to achieve ROI, drive traffic, and new customers.

•Manage campaign expenses staying on budget, estimating monthly costs, and reconciling discrepancies.

•Working with agency, perform ongoing paid strategy discovery, expansion and optimization. Research and analyze competitors.

•Identify new paid digital advertising opportunities to test


Other Responsibilities

•Act as a member of the marketing team to develop ideas/recommendations to increase lead generation, with a focus on website, social media, and paid digital advertising.

•Participate in the development of marketing tactics/budgets, ensuring that assigned projects are managed on time and within designated budgets.

•Cultivate and maintain effective working relationships with internal stakeholders and external vendors and partners including tour operators, etc.

•Other digital marketing related projects as needed.


Education, Requirements and Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3-5 years of web production, digital marketing, social media, PPC campaigns, project management or other, related experience.


  • Exceptional organization and project management skills, with ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Experience in travel digital marketing, a plus.
  • Familiarity with CRM (Salesforce.com).
  • High energy self-starter who is proactive, detail-oriented, organized, customer-oriented, and a collaborative team player.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and communication skills are necessary.
  • Minimum of 2-years working with web-based content management systems.
  • Minimum of 2-years working on PPC campaigns, social media marketing (Sprout), digital analytics tools (Google Analytics)
  • Working knowledge of HTML and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Canva, and/or Illustrator).


Salary range: $65,000 – $72,000 annually, commensurate with employment/education.
