Job Description

DevSecOps Engineer


Location: Oak Ridge, TN

Salary: $160,000 - $170,000 per year

Duration : 6 months contract


Position Summary

The US Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information (DOE OSTI) is seeking an DevSecOps Engineer Evangelist to join our Technology team in preserving and disseminating DOE’s scientific and technical information via web applications. This role will be responsible for implementing DevSecOps best practices across the enterprise in support of OSTI’s transition to a modernized web application platform powered by containerized applications, providing technical guidance to development teams, and improving agility and delivery speed and driving cultural change towards a DevSecOps mindset. The position will primarily develop and implement a strategy to migrate OSTI’s current application development process and applications to a more DevSecOps-styled deployment process by formalizing policies, procedures, and practices using DevSecOps tooling to deliver OSTI’s web applications. This is a 6 month contract.

US Citizenship is required.


Position-Specific Duties
· Coach and mentor development teams on the adoption of DevSecOps practices, with a focus on migrating to continuous integration, continuous delivery, monitoring, static code analysis, and quality built-in.
· Work with the team to define and implement development best practices and standards within the organization and to transition current organizational applications to these standards.
· Automate systems administration tasks utilizing open-source configuration management tools as part of a deployment pipeline.
· Identify automation opportunities to improve DevSecOps operations, make recommendations to management, and lead the implementation of improvements, such as pipelines, container development, etc.
· Review architecture and offer recommendations for improvements; lead implementation efforts on containerized infrastructure.
· Work with team to adopt and optimize a hybrid-cloud software-defined infrastructure and infrastructure as code paradigm
· Embrace continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) processes. Train and mentor junior-level staff on these processes.
· Evaluate new technology options and vendor products; rely on expertise to recommend new technology and products to management.
· CI/CD technologies – GitLab and Red Hat OpenShift primarily.
· Configuration Management - i.e. Ansible, etc.
· Identify and document IT best practices that will improve the systems deployment function
· Ensure the secure and effective operation of computing systems through compliance with OSTI procedures and IT Internal Operating Procedures.
· Work with other systems engineers and vendors to resolve hardware and software issues.
· Answer escalated helpline calls in addition to primary project work.
· Maintain documentation/notes on software builds and installs and develop documented processes and procedures for migrating Java and Python applications to containerized DevSecOps deployment processes

Education, Training, Experience
· Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical subjects or equivalent combination of education and experience.
· A minimum of 7 years of experience managing DevSecOps Systems (including Linux, Gitlab, etc.)
· A minimum of 2 years of experience managing container infrastructure using Red Hat OpenShift/Kubernetes.
· A minimum of 2 years utilizing configuration management and automation tools such as GitLab Ultimate and Ansible, Puppet or other CI/CD pipeline tools.
· Fluency in at least one scripting language such as Bash, Python, Go or equivalent
· Fluency in migrating Java and Python applications to containerized environments.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

· Working knowledge of multiple operating systems and containerization solutions.
· Experience with RHEL7/8
· Knowledge of networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, traffic analysis, common protocols, and network diagnostics.
· Previous experience working in a government, scientific, or other highly technical environment.
· Background of contributing to open-source projects or avocational endeavors such as hacker/maker spaces is desirable.
· Technical documentation skills, including the ability to prepare advanced documentation web pages.
· Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for user support and ability to work well with peer system administrators.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Ability to work independently and demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
· Demonstrated ability to balance complex research and security requirements.

Physical Abilities
· Ability to sit for long periods.
· Ability to view computer monitor for long periods.
