Job Description
Position Summary


The Town of Breckenridge Police Department is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Detective. Detectives perform a wide variety of complex police work involved in the operation of the Town Police Department. They conduct initial and follow-up investigations of crimes as assigned. Detectives assist the District Attorney’s Office in case preparation and prosecution and work in cooperation with various police and social service agencies. Case assignments may include the investigation of crimes against persons as well as crimes against property. Detectives may occasionally be required to work weekends, non-regularly assigned work shifts, or be called into work by the Assistant Chief of Police or a Supervisor. Must be able to handle all officer assigned functions.
In addition to the requirements of Police Officer, Detectives must possess high initiative and resourcefulness in the investigation of criminal matters. Possess extensive knowledge of criminal law and procedures. Possess considerable knowledge of methods and practices of criminal investigation. Possess extensive knowledge of department rules and regulations, federal and state law, and town ordinances. Possess the ability to obtain information through observation, interview and interrogation.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or GED and a minimum of 60 hours of higher education at an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Colorado driver's license at time of appointment.
  • The ability to successfully complete a background check including but not limited to: Criminal history search, polygraph, psychological and physical examination required.
  • 21 years of age; eligible to work in the United States
  • For internal candidates, a minimum of 3 years certified sworn patrol experience.
  • Possess a current Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification
  • For external candidates, a minimum of 3 years experience as a Detective, having been assigned to a Detective Bureau, Investigations Bureau, or Major Crimes task force where those duties parallel those of the responsibilities listed in the position description.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

If selected to interview, candidates will be expected to participate in oral interviews. Candidates who are selected to proceed after their interview, will participate in a ride-a-long and integrity interview. If a candidate is selected to move forward in the recruitment after their ride-a-long and integrity interview, they may be offered a conditional offer of employment based on their successful completion of polygraph testing, psychological exam, medical examination, and a thorough background check. DISQUALIFIERS
The Town of Breckenridge has disqualification guidelines for Sworn Officer positions. They generally relate to the following background criteria: integrity, narcotics behavior, driving history, excessive force or violence, financial responsibility and employment history and discipline.
