    SUMMARY

    California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) seeks a Deputy Director and Curator, Performing Arts, for the Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater (REDCAT) to develop and oversee the artistic program in performance, theater, and dance, reporting to the Vice President of Cultural Partnerships and Steven D. Lavine Executive Director of REDCAT.

    The Deputy Director, Performing Arts, is encouraged to develop an inclusive, dynamic, risktaking, artist-centered and intersectional program of performances, commissions, programs, and events that advances CalArts’ national and international standing in the field of contemporary arts.

    REDCAT, CalArts’ downtown center for contemporary arts, is a multidisciplinary center for innovative visual, performing and media arts in the Walt Disney concert Hall complex of the Los Angeles Music Center in downtown. Through performances, exhibitions, screenings and literary events, REDCAT introduces diverse audiences, students and artists to the most influential developments in the arts from around the world. REDCAT gives artists in the region a platform to help them achieve national and international stature through festivals, residencies, and collaborations with CalArts. REDCAT furthers the mission of the California Institute of the Arts, its parent organization, by encouraging experimentation, discovery, and lively civic discourse. Throughout its history, the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theatre (REDCAT) has worked to be an equitable forum for experimentation and innovation with commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in its program offerings, staff, and artists.

    Requirements

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Oversee front-of-house operations (box office, lounge) working with Front of House Manager and Box Office Manager (direct reports.)
    • Work with Executive Director and Advancement staff in the cultivation of donors and to support fundraising and grant management, including proposal development, reporting, and stewardship.
    • Act as a programming liaison between REDCAT and related departments at CalArts: School of Dance, School of Theater and Herb Alpert School of Music on related collaborations and programs.
    • Develop and oversee REDCAT’s program of performance, dance, and theater, working with the Executive Director to provide an innovative offer focused on experimentation and innovation, with commitment to diversity, equity, and accessibility.
    • Produce and oversee didactic and promotional materials as needed.
    • Build and foster relationships through partnerships and engagement with arts and culture institutions both nationally and internationally.
    • Manage program-related operations alongside Chief Curator & Deputy Director; Programs, and with Administrative Manager and Production & Facilities Manager as direct reports.
    • Work with REDCAT Technical Director and Associate Technical Directors on planning and production of performances and programs for the REDCAT theater.
    • Develop, administer, and track robust program calendar each season and related budget.

    Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • At least five years of programmatic professional experience in the performing arts is desired.
    • Experience with administration, management, and fundraising for robust contemporary performing arts programs.
    • Knowledge and engagement with wide developments in the contemporary performing arts, including global south.
    • Demonstrated experience with programming, curating, and advocacy of artists across formats.
    • Demonstrated ability working productively with artists within budgetary and time constraints.
    • Demonstrated engagement with contemporary dance, performance, and theater and multidisciplinary arts practice with both a local and international focus.
