Department Summary:
The Department of Art and Art History seeks candidates for a full-time, 1 year, benefited faculty position in Art Education for the 2023- 2024 academic year.
The mission of the Department of Art and Art History at Bridgewater State University is to engage students in the exploration and development of their individual creative interests and skills, and their art historical knowledge, analytical abilities and research experience. Our faculty strives to provide an environment in which students can investigate a full range of artistic expressions in the traditional studio and graphic arts, as well as in new technologies, within low-enrollment classes that promote a sense of community and positive learning experiences through strong student-teacher relationships. It is the Department of Art and Art Historys conviction that the teaching of art is most successful when art teachers philosophical and pedagogical approach is informed by their own studio practice. Students within our program develop knowledge and skills in at least one area and are expected to create a cohesive body of artwork in tandem with their Education degree.

Essential Duties:
While the Department of Art and Art History is within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, teaching responsibilities for this position will fall within both the Department of Art and Art History and the College of Education and Health Sciences Program of Secondary Education (pre-K - 8 and/or 5 - 12).
Specific responsibilities include:
  • Oversee EDHM 490 "Teaching Practicum for the Visual Arts" - evaluation of student teaching in regional schools. On-site evaluation of teaching practice requires travel to regional schools off campus. A vehicle will be provided by university if needed
  • Develop a new Art Education course for the Dept. of Art and Art History (to be taught Spring 23 semester)
  • Teach studio art foundation level classes
  • Teach ARTS 392 "Methods/Materials Art Teacher" (Fall 22 semester)
  • Advise students in both studio and Art Education majors, including licensure procedures for Art Education, both Pre K-8 and Grades 5-12
  • Teach EDHM 425 "Strategies for Teaching Visual Art" (Spring 23 semester for the College of Education and Health Sciences)


Required Qualifications:
Successful candidates will have experience working with diverse student populations from a wide range of age, ethnicity, national origin, and ability; engage in and develop innovative teaching strategies; effectively assess student learning outcomes.
  • Experience with Pre K- 12 teaching preferred
  • Ability to teach day and evening classes.
  • Candidates must also demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of students from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of abilities.
  • Masters degree in related field
  • Teaching experience preferred.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD or EdD in a related field. ABD candidates will be considered.
