Job Duties

The Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) is seeking dynamic and driven individuals to join the Informational Technology Division as Data Visualization Developer Experts.
VEC Data Visualization Developer Experts, are responsible for IT phases of the system development lifecycle (SDLC) for one or more automated IT applications, systems and software. Confer with analysts, domain experts and users to understand and document requirements, estimate levels of effort, and meet system needs.
They gather requirements for, design, develop, implement, and maintain a set of techniques and analytic applications to transform raw data into meaningful information using data-oriented programming languages and visualization software.
They determine feasibility of systems enhancements/automation; provide technical expertise in the development and implementation of new or changing applications; and work with staff and end users to identify and resolve application issues.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of and/or experience with data science, statistical analysis and interpretation (including distribution, testing, regression, etc.), and data management processes; the design and build of visualizations and analytics; complex SQL queries, M language, and DAX formulas to create production ready data models; SDLC methodologies; industry best practices in source code control and configuration management; and data science toolkits (e.g., R, SAS, Python, GO, and Scala) and visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, SAS VA, and QlickView).
Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication, IT design and development, project management, analytical and problem resolution skills.
Demonstrated ability and experience designing and maintaining analytics platforms and data visualization applications; ingesting and manipulating data in Power BI from multiple sources; developing charts, matrices, heat maps, and other visualizations; hosting Power BI reports on cloud and on-premise platforms; developing, analyzing and managing large data sets (unstructured and structured); integrating data from different sources and across different platforms; working productively with IT and other business partners to develop and define business requirements for data, systems and processes, and to make improvement recommendations; conduct and interpret statistical analysis.
Demonstrated ability and experience using data science tools and techniques to transform business and achieve business objectives; apply data-oriented approaches to problem solving; functioning as a technical expert on complex applications, systems, software and projects; directing and monitoring the work of others; mentoring and training staff; supporting multiple IT projects; interacting effectively in a team environment; and working independently with strict deadlines, heavy workload and changing priorities.


Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Analytics, Statistics, Systems Engineering, Information Technology or related area or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Experience working with large complex databases, applying complex statistical analyses and interpreting results, and using data science tools and techniques preferred.
MS Power BI or related certification, and project management experience.
