Custodian Jobs

The City of Altoona has a current opening for a full-time Custodian at its City Hall location. The Custodian performs duties related to the custodial care of municipal buildings and surrounding grounds. Assignments are limited in nature and are carried out in accordance with detailed instructions. Activities affect the cleaning and maintenance of an assigned building or area.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

• Inspects and maintains assigned custodial equipment and small tools in proper operating condition.
• May order supplies, keeps stock of custodial material and equipment within budget.
• Cuts grass, trims hedges, cares for flower beds, shovels snow, sweeps and cleans walks and assists in keeping outside premises in an orderly condition.
• Maintains current skills and knowledge of proper and safe techniques of building maintenance.
• Replaces light bulbs; makes simple repairs to buildings and equipment; reports damage to structures and equipment that requires repair; assists in painting as needed.
• Cleans offices, empties trash cans and relines cans with liners.
• Opens, closes, and locks and unlocks facilities as needed.
• Keeps records of work scheduled and completed.
• Mops, scrubs and/or vacuums floors; strips, waxes and polishes floors and furniture; dusts furniture; cleans and polishes brass; cleans lavatories and replaces lavatory supplies; cleans windows; disposes of waste paper.
• Moves furniture and equipment; delivers supplies; runs errands.
• Routine maintenance (i.e., changing HVAC filters).

Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalency

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment required to conduct the duties of the job;
• Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule; ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time; ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment; ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
• Working knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance; working knowledge of equipment and supplies used to make minor repairs; knowledge of applicable safety precautions;
