Job Description
CURATORIAL PRINT & CONTENT ASSOCIATE


OVERVIEW: The Curatorial Print & Content Associate oversees the museum’s in-house curatorial text and content, including exhibition catalogues and in-gallery texts (labels) for 20+ exhibitions and installations per year. Known as the only repository of art from around the world in the Northwest, SAM organizes diverse exhibitions and publications. In addition, its permanent collection galleries are updated regularly with changing installations.


Reporting to the Senior Manager of Exhibitions, the Print & Content Associate coordinates production schedules, budgets, and contracts for publications and gallery related text and content. The Print & Content Associate also supervises the museum’s on-call editor and works closely with individual museum curators on publications and labels for the changing galleries and exhibitions across three SAM locations.


The Print & Content Associate is in constant rapport with members of the curatorial division as well as colleagues in other departments; is mindful of the institution’s mission; and helps to foreground values of racial equity. The ideal candidate will combine excellent project management and communication skills with a love of art.

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt REPORTS TO: Senior Manager of Exhibitions and Publications


COMPENSATION: $24.02-$30.03 hourly pay range; 40 hours per week


BENEFITS: Full time employees are covered by medical, dental, vision, basic life insurance/LTD/AD&D. Employees are able to enroll in our company’s 403b plan. Employees will also receive ten days of sick leave and ten days of vacation leave every year, twelve paid holidays and one floating holiday throughout the calendar year. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Manages special tasks as needed, including distribution of SAM curatorial publications to rights grantors.
  • Processes all exhibition and publication contract related payments and invoices.
  • Coordinates with outside and on-call editors on delivery of manuscripts. Finalizes and transfers all accurate materials on time to the publisher.
  • Coordinates publication meetings with curators, SAM Store, and publisher.
  • Demonstrates editorial review on text and web content.
  • Serves as project manager for all in-house produced curatorial publications.
  • Formats labels using InDesign for SAM collection galleries.
  • In collaboration with the Curatorial and the Communications Department, serves as in-house expert on institutional style guide. Supervises on-call editor.
  • Manages label schedule and timeline for 20+ installations and exhibitions per year.
  • Secures permissions and image rights for publications.
  • Leads label equity review on exhibitions and collection reinstallations with cross-divisional partners.
  • Tracks publication budgets and curatorial inventory and distribution.
  • Reviews all curatorial web content, gallery text, and wall labels with the perspective of equity and access, provides feedback to curators, and routes label copy for approval and final production.
  • Manage curatorial texts and publication schedule, including contract and budget schedules.
  • Serves as institutional liaison with publishers, printers, and distributors.
  • Reviews publication-related contracts with legal department.


QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:


  • Demonstrated experience managing publications
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and to project a professional image when giving and taking information in writing, in person, and over the phone.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and accuracy using MS Office products, including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, SharePoint and other software programs such as InDesign, Asana, and TMS. Using InDesign is required in this role.
  • Ability to work with close attention to detail and to maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated project management, and image rights and copyright administration experience.
  • Bachelor's degree (master’s degree preferred) and three or more years’ of relevant administrative work experience within a not-for-profit setting, or the equivalent education and experience.
  • Familiarity with works of art and art terminology and institutions.
  • Ability to work professionally and tactfully, to adhere to Museum policies and ethics of racial equity to support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with management, employees, and museum partners. Ability to supervise employees and volunteers.
  • Ability to take initiative and prioritize multiple competing tasks; excellent time-management and problem-solving skills.


WORKING CONDITIONS:


Exposure : Work areas are primarily inside, in a climate-controlled environment with light background noise. Work is occasionally performed at other indoor and outdoor sites.


PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED FOR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


Stationary Work : Approximately 80% of time is spent stationary while working at a desk. Balance of time (approximately 20%) is spent moving around the work area. Occasional extended periods of standing may be required when assisting at Museum events.


Communication : Clear and effective communication with volunteers, donors, members, the public, and co-workers is necessary.


Moving : The ability to move up to twenty pounds on occasion is necessary for moving files, equipment, and supplies. Must be able to regularly position self to access files.


Office Work : Ability to effectively and regularly operate a computer, keyboard, and other office productivity machinery, such as copy machines and printers, and ability to inspect, prepare and use paperwork, files, equipment, and supplies is necessary.
