Job Summary
The curatorial department at the Getty Research Institute seeks a curatorial assistant to work jointly with its head of modern & contemporary collections and the African American Art History Initiative. The African American Art History Initiative focuses on the history, practices, and cultural legacies of artists of African American and African diasporic heritage. The ideal candidate will be a specialist in African American Art History with some additional experience working in adjacent areas of modern and contemporary art. This position will assist in the planning, research, and organization of acquisitions, exhibitions, publications and public events. The position will also assist curators and scholars with accessing collections and replying to inquiries as needed, as well as preparing collection materials for imaging and other tasks needed in the preparation of exhibitions and public presentations.
Major Job Responsibilities
  • May publish original works in area of specialization
  • May select and provide images and write corresponding text and captions for promotion of a publication online and in print
  • May assist in the research and logistical operations needed to evaluate loan requests
  • Assists in the organization of exhibitions, publications, public events, and other research assignments as needed
  • Applies knowledge of art history and art education to routine curatorial assignments
  • May organize and conduct presentations of material for classes and other scholarly groups
  • Assists with preparation of acquisitions proposals and may make acquisition recommendations to the curator
Qualifications
  • Reading fluency in at least one foreign language preferred
  • 0-2 years art historical or museum experience; 2-3 years experience preferred
  • Knowledgeable in basic curatorial functions and processes
  • Bachelor’s degree in art or art history required; Master’s preferred
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Proven ability to work in partnership in teams across disciplines and build relationships
  • Experience with art historical research and writing
