Job Description

The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for
two Long-Term, Non-Permanent, Criminal Justice Technicians 1 for the Hiland Mountain Correctional Center Admissions and Records area located in Eagle River, Alaska.
What You Will Be Doing
We are seeking energetic, well-organized, individuals who are capable of performing a variety of paraprofessional work. Examples of job duties associated with this position include, but are not limited to:
Processing, filing and distributing incoming files and paperwork. Answering phone calls and maintaining prisoner records.
  • Reconciling and processing incoming and outgoing files to ensure their completeness as well as accuracy.
  • Entering, maintaining, updating, and correcting multiple computerized databases.
  • The work hours for this position will be 37.5 hours per week.
  • Processing incoming Court paperwork which includes interpreting statutes and understanding the request of the Courts on how an offender is to be imprisoned.
  • Other duties as assigned in accordance with DOC policies and procedures, and Institutional Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Backup duties for DNA testing and processing.
  • Calculating prisoner Time Accounting Records (computation of release dates and parole eligibility dates) by conducting investigative research and ensuring accuracy of offender records and incarceration history. (Training will be provided.)

The working environment you can expect:
The Admissions Department is a fast-paced area that involves interaction with Law Enforcement, Correctional Officers, Probation Officers, Pretrial Officers, Medical staff and prisoners. There will be times when prisoners may be aggressive and/or intoxicated.

You will be working in an adult correctional facility. Correctional Facilities operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Who We Are Looking For
  • Strong organizational skills and self-initiative are a must.
  • Willingness to attend the DOC’s Basic Time Accounting course before the completion of the incumbent’s first year of employment; and an Advanced Time Accounting course when made available.
  • A pattern of reliable behaviors on the job, including dependability, punctuality and the ability to carry out tasks independently.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment with multiple and constant distractions and interruptions.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment establishing and maintaining a cooperative and effective working relationship with a wide variety of individuals/organizations.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
AND
One year of advanced clerical experience.
OR
One year of law enforcement or criminal justice experience equivalent to Correctional Officer 1, Adult Probation Officer 1, Court Services Officer, Juvenile Probation Officer 1, Juvenile Justice Officer 1, or State Trooper Recruit with the State of Alaska.
Substitution
Post-secondary education will substitute for the experience on a month-for-month basis (3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience).
Special Note
High school graduation "equivalent" includes a G.E.D., or completion of any basic adult education course of 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 hours per week), or six months of work experience performing duties related to the job class, or twelve months of work experience involving some routine tasks related to the job in question, or highest grade of school completed plus amount of work experience which totals 12 years.

PREA Notification
The Department of Corrections follows and maintains federal and state requirements standards including, but not limited to, Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards which apply to all public and private institutions that house adult or juvenile offenders. PREA standards preclude the department from hiring or promoting anyone who has engaged in, or been convicted of any conduct which would violate PREA standards related to sexual assault including:
  • Convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse; or

Education
If post-secondary education is required to meet the minimum qualifications, you must fill in the Education section of the application. Education completed in foreign colleges, universities, or high schools may be used to meet the minimum qualifications listed above. If utilizing this education, you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the post-secondary institution or high school. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

Criminal History Checks/Apsin/Acoms
Please be aware – this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN)/Alaska Corrections Offender Management System (ACOMS). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN/ACOMS. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
