Under the general supervision of a Crime Analyst Supervisor, in the Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) Background Team, the Crime Analyst (CA) I provides firearms services to licensing law enforcement agencies (LEAs) required by California law to submit LiveScan (electronic fingerprint submission) applications and renewal backgrounds to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for CCW licensing purposes. The CA I will analyze the firearms eligibility status of applicants utilizing criminal offender record information (CORI) and other firearms eligibility related records in the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS), including law enforcement databases such as the Automated Firearms System (AFS), Firearms Applicant Eligibility File (FEAF), Automated Criminal History System (ACHS), Wanted Persons System (WPS), Mental Health Firearms Prohibition System (MHFPS), California Restraining and Protection Order System (CARPOS), Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV), Applicant Processor, Law Enforcement Enterprise Portal (LEEP), National Instant Check System (NICS), CCW Application, Armed Prohibited Persons System, and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database. Upon making a determination, the CA I generates a notification of authorization/denial and sends the notification to the applicant agency to complete the firearms request. Additionally, the CA I conducts annual reviews, monitors subsequent arrest notifications of authorized applicants and notifies licensing LEAs if applicants become prohibited from purchasing, possessing or owning a firearm. In addition to processing background checks, the CA I must have the ability to research and reconcile incomplete or inaccurate records generated from reports and database systems; understand the criminal justice system, confidentiality, and State and Federal laws and regulations as it relates to a applicants eligibility to purchase, possess or own firearms in California; and communicate via phone, facsimile or email with law enforcement and other government agencies to obtain missing dispositions and warrants, as well as other pertinent information necessary to determine firearms eligibility.

Working Conditions


DOJ has adopted telework for employees who can effectively perform their essential work functions remotely. After an initial training period, this position may allow for some telework opportunities.
