Controller / Cfo- Construction Industry

I'm working on a 'hands-on' Controller / CFO opportunity (no separate CFO at the company) for the owner / CEO for one of our privately-held, growing clients in the construction and renovation space, with annual revenue approx. $12M - $15M, that's doubled in the past few years, and is expected to grow to $20M within a couple of years. The work is on site in Manhattan with the potential to work remotely for a day or two per week in the future. Base salary is up to approx. $150k, perhaps a bit more. The CEO seeks a Controller / CFO with a strong knowledge of general / G/L accounting, operational accounting, budgeting, forecasting and analysis within a construction, engineering or manufacturing environment, with experience that includes percentage of completion and milestones accounting for revenue recognition, CIP, AIA's, etc.

The Controller / CFO opportunity is a do-er role, responsible for original accounting and FP&A work while the company is at its current stage of maturity and growth, allowing the new hire to be in the detail and 'hands-on' to best become familiar with all facets of the accounting and FP&A, and to learn the business and its processes, policies and procedures at an in-depth level. As the company grows and becomes more complex, it's expected the Controller / CFO will build out the accounting and FP&A team. This position is therefore not a good fit for candidates who wish to mainly 'manage', review the original work performed by others on their team, and not perform original work at a detailed level.

Responsibilities:

• Own and manage daily cash flow and cash forecasts.
• Improve internal control procedures to maintain accurate and consistent accounting and reporting.
• Own and perform general ledger structure and maintenance, financial reporting, technical GAAP accounting, variance analysis, proper documentation of all work-papers and analysis, accounts payable and accounts receivable, 1099 filing and sales tax filings.
• Partner with Project Managers regarding project budgets, ETC's, EAC's, Earned Value, billings and job costing, as well as preparation of AIA's and WIP reports.
• Perform and manage day to day accounting including account reconciliations, month and year end close, A/P, A/R, billings, audit requests and financial statement preparation.
• Identify, implement and monitor financial processes and procedures.
• Full accountability for performing and directing the company's overall accounting operations, and for developing and preparing budgets, forecasts, and cost control processes.
• Ensure payroll, sales tax and union reporting is accurately prepared and filed.

Qualifications:

• General / G/L accounting experience, as well as project accounting experience
• Excellent presentation and communication skills - ability to communicate with all org levels
• 'Hands-on' experience with various software applications and ERPs
• 10+ years of total relevant experience, with 5+ years of recent relevant experience in the construction (preferred), engineering or manufacturing industry
• Excellent project management and leadership skills
• B.S. in Accounting, CPA/MBA is a plus
• Advanced Excel skills
