The Contract News Editor will be tasked with expanding our coverage of the places where art meets other parts of the cultural sphere—archaeology, pop culture, science and tech, celebrity, entertainment, and more. A successful candidate will have both a broad grasp of the tectonic shifts taking place in culture and a firm grip on the rhythms and whims of trending topics online. The person will assign and edit stories according to our fast-paced publishing schedule while making sure every story meets Artnet News’s standards of accuracy, legibility, and insight.

This is a remote working position and you will be reporting to the Global News Editor of Artnet News, headquartered in our London office, working with the editorial team in New York, Berlin, and our wider global network.

• Ensure each story is properly entered into our Wordpress CMS with engaging imagery and thorough metadata
• Coordinate with other editors to ensure stories are assigned and published in a timely manner according to our broader editorial plan
• Maintain regular communication with writers and editors throughout the course of each day
• Make sure each story adheres to Artnet News’s style and standards
• Identify stories from a wide variety of sources just outside the traditional art world, from scientific journals to obscure corners of art TikTok
• Assign and edit 4-7 stories per day, primarily short news items that connect the art world to broader cultural moments and points of intersection with other fields in a way that appeals to a broad audience
• Recruit and work with freelance writers to maintain a steady flow of stories in this coverage area—make sure they are assigned, explained thoroughly, and coming in on time and to word count

Qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience with one or more of the following subject areas: contemporary art, the art market, art history, architecture, design, art and technology, archaeology, pop culture
• 3–5 years of professional editing experience
• Familiarity with Wordpress or another content management system
• A team player with a bias toward creative problem solving
• A network of freelance writers who can broaden our contributor base
• Impeccable editing skills; the ability to turn rough copy on complex subjects into gripping, pristine journalism under tight deadlines

Salary Description

$250-$375/day, Monthly Retainer
