About the Department
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences, one of the largest colleges at North Carolina State University, is home to 10 academic units and supports three community-oriented centers. The college offers more than 55 undergraduate majors, more than 40 undergraduate minors, 12 master’s degrees, five Ph.D. programs, three dual-degree honors programs and four graduate certificate programs. The mission of the college is to serve the residents of North Carolina and meet the challenges of the 21st century by educating our students to be future leaders and responsible citizens with a distinctive willingness to engage in the life of their communities, their state and their nation.
The college’s communications and marketing office develops strategies, messages and content to achieve the goals of the college and its audiences. This includes elevating and refining the college’s identity and brand, enhancing fundraising efforts, aligning strategic communications work and providing audiences with the information they need to be successful and engaged.

Essential Job Duties
This position will focus on writing and editing content for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences website, digital magazine and other print and digital channels. This includes identifying, researching and writing news stories, features, web copy and other content to help define the college’s identity and raise awareness about its work.
The content writer will work closely with college communications and marketing team members — including the director, assistant director and social media specialist — to inform and execute the office’s content strategy and editorial calendar. The position will also take a lead role in editing content created by other team members and college personnel.

Qualifications

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.



Other Required Qualifications
  • Experience using AP style and following a brand’s editorial style guide.
  • Ability to meet multiple overlapping deadlines with both short and long lead times.
  • Considerable knowledge of English grammar, composition, and style; ability to proofread materials for accuracy and consistency.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate to a diverse population.
  • Excellent organization and project management skills.
  • A versatility and enthusiasm for adapting to new writing styles and writing for an array of age groups, constituencies and goals.
  • Comfortable working on a team in a mixed in-office/remote environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English or a related discipline.
  • A highly motivated self-starter able to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with WordPress or similar content management systems.
  • Familiarity with design programs such as the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience with basic photography and/or videography.
  • At least one year of related experience in a professional, writing-intensive role in communications, journalism, media relations, public relations or similar field.
