Conservation Technician I Department: Reservoirs / ROW Reports To: Watershed Manager - Scientist & Conservation Pay Grade: FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB SUMMARY The Conservation Technician I is responsible for assisting with sustainability of the watershed and reservoir through a variety of activities and studies of forestry, horticulture, hydrology, and wildlife. May be assigned to assist with asks such as building trails, removing trees from the reservoir, clearing roads, etc. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Assists with a variety of assigned scientific studies related to water quality, forestry, fisheries, drought management, etc. Assists with various sustainability initiatives to reduce cost and environmental impact. May be assigned to complete grant applications, working with department leaders to gather documentation and to fulfill necessary requirements of various funding bodies on behalf of Greenville Water. Assists with research and analysis to enhance source water protection, sustainability and water loss initiatives. Performs measurement and maintains data related to a variety of key performance indicators related to various studies. Assists with controlled burns. Fights forest fires, as required. Ensures trails, roads and fire roads are maintained. Assists with the completion of the annual AWWA water audit. Knowledgeable in the safe operation of trucks, riding mowers, bush hogs and boats, which are utilized in the maintenance of the watershed or Right of Way. Patrols assigned areas; enforces rules and regulations pertaining to the maintenance and use of properties. Performs all duties according to established policies, procedures, and standards of quality and safety. Maintains and performs minor repairs to assigned equipment. Prepares daily maintenance records and completes additional paperwork as required. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other department supervisors and employees, co-workers, property owners, customers, and the public. On call 24 hours per day. May be required to work rotating weekends and nights. Performs other related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate's Degree in Forestry, Biology, Horticulture, Environmental Science, Hydrology or Wildlife is required. BS Degree in one of these areas is preferred, but not required. Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience this field. Must maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license. Must be able to obtain the following certifications within 2 years: EPA Watershed Certificate Adopt a Stream Chainsaw Class S-212 or equivalent Wildland Fire: S-130; S-190, L-180 Skills Checklist confirming competent to use: Mower, Tractor, Backhoe, Dozer & Excavator To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily.
