Job Description
Position Summary
Center for Community Alternatives is hiring a Community Organizer who will be responsible for building a base of campaign members and leaders, coordinating coalitions, and playing a key role in our advocacy, policy, and campaign efforts to dismantle systems of mass incarceration and mass criminalization. Current campaigns include Communities Not Cages, Clean Slate, No Price on Justice, Justice Roadmap, and the People’s Campaign for Parole Justice, all with the goal of decarcerating jails and prisons, ending perpetual punishment, and winning real investments in community-based resources. The Community Organizer will report to the Director of Advocacy and Organizing and will work closely with other members of the advocacy staff. This is a full-time position that will require regular travel to Albany and other parts of New York State, including occasional overnight travel. Candidates must also be available to work some evenings and weekends. We welcome applications from candidates based anywhere in New York State.
Direct Supervisor: Director of Advocacy and Organizing
Duties And Responsibilities
  • Communications: Participate in writing op-eds, letters to the editors, press quotes, and social media posts. Work with campaign members to develop materials that elevate their voices.
  • General Support: Manage day to day operations and provide administrative support as needed.
  • Community Outreach, Base-Building and Leadership Development: Build the membership and leadership of people who have been impacted by mass incarceration and mass criminalization by conducting outreach, developing events and trainings, and coordinating monthly member meetings.
  • Policy & Legislative Advocacy: Play a key role in coordinating Albany-based events, scheduling and planning meetings with elected officials and developing campaign materials. Stay up-to-speed with policy issues and support the political and policy education of members. Engage in campaign strategy development and execution.
  • Campaign Actions, Events and Mobilization: Collaboratively envision, plan, and coordinate campaign actions to strategically advance policy and legislative goals. Ensure the leadership of impacted members in planning rallies, town halls, press conferences and lobby days.
  • Coalition and Partner Organizing: Develop strategic partnerships and coordinate coalitions with grassroots, direct service, and advocacy organizations.
Qualifications
  • Flexibility for statewide travel and ability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • An understanding of the criminal legal system and key policy issues.
  • Knowledge and experience organizing events and actions, such as press conferences, rallies, trainings, teach-ins, and town halls.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with community outreach, identifying and supporting members, and leadership development.
  • A serious commitment to dismantling systems of mass criminalization and to building the leadership of directly impacted people.
  • Demonstrated ability to build partnerships and effectively facilitate meetings.
  • Top-notch organizational skills.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience, including community organizing or work on issue or policy campaigns.
  • Relevant personal experience in terms of recovery and/or justice involvement, a plus.
  • People who have been impacted by the criminal legal system or are formerly incarcerated are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Enthusiasm for working collaboratively, as well as an ability to work independently and see projects through from start to finish.
