PSE Healthy Energy is a non-profit energy science and policy research institute dedicated to a healthy, resilient, and equitable energy future.

Our team of public health professionals, scientists, and engineers integrate technical expertise across multiple fields to inform science-based energy policy. Our mission is to generate science-based energy and climate solutions that protect public health and the environment.

POSITION

PSE Healthy Energy is seeking a full-time Scientist to work collaboratively with PSE's staff of scientists, engineers, data analysts, and communications experts to provide scientific and technical assistance to a broad base of community-based organizations and other stakeholders. This position will include meeting with community groups to characterize research needs, conducting analyses, and working with PSE's staff to effectively translate and communicate science to diverse audiences. Research topics will likely address a mix of energy equity, energy affordability, public health, environmental science, oil and gas, and sociodemographic questions. The role will require being flexible, working with multiple team members and external collaborators, and responding quickly to changing research needs and a dynamic science-policy landscape.

This role is meant for someone who both loves analyzing data and doing science and who also loves working closely with non-scientists to use data to inform their work. The ideal candidate will be comfortable conducting research and analysis and eager to simultaneously educate and learn from non-scientific partners. The candidate should be self-motivated, willing to adapt to multiple roles, be ready to bring new ideas to the table, and excited to work in an environment where there is always more to learn and there is always a new frame to put on a problem.

It is not expected that a single candidate will have expertise across all these areas—we're seeking candidates that are particularly strong in a few areas and have some interest, capabilities, and willingness to learn in others.

ROLES And RESPONSIBILITIES

• Communication and Output: Write clear and often translated scientific work products for publication in media and blog posts
• Work with communities, NGOs, and other stakeholders to identify research and data needs
• Research: Utilize strong investigatory, analytical, and writing skills to conduct data analysis, synthesize and aggregate relevant papers or research, edit documents and reports, and visualize data for technical and non-scientific audiences. Learn from community partners to inform research and identify broader research topics and themes for follow-on research and science-policy work.
• Contribute to technical reports, peer-reviewed papers, and other work products.
• And produce summaries of findings and rapid response analyses for the public and decision-makers
• Communicate scientific concepts directly to citizens, policymakers, NGOs and the media

Required Skills

In addition to an ability to meet the above responsibilities, the ideal candidate will possess:

• Experience teaching, collaborating with, or otherwise partnering with non-technical audiences
• Years of experience experience in energy systems, energy economics, environmental public health, environmental science, engineering, or related field
• A master's degree with 2
• Years of experience -or- a bachelor's degree with 4
• Experience with one or more of the following: Python, R, Stata, SPSS, Tableau, GIS and air quality modeling software.

Other analytical and data visualization tools strongly desired

• Ability to pivot from strong analytical and data-driven thinking to highly creative thinking
• Able to work independently and collaboratively
• Attention to detail and a desire to listen and learn
• Able to productively provide and receive feedback
• A sense of humor
• Capable of prioritizing projects and research responsibilities effectively
• Excellent writing and oral communications skills
• A proven track record of working across multiple sectors including, but not limited to, public agencies, academic institutions, and community organizations

Desired Skills

• Experience with Google Workspace (Gmail, Google Docs, etc.)
• Demonstrated experience working at the science-policy interface
• Familiarity with Slack
• A doctoral degree in energy systems, energy economics, environmental public health, environmental science, engineering, or related field
• Energy systems modeling

LOCATION

Oakland, CA or Seattle, WA. Remote locations will also be considered.

SALARY

The anticipated salary range is $62,500-$87,500+, though the successful candidate could be hired above or below this range depending on qualifications and geographic location. Benefits are competitive and include health benefits (medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance), flexible spending account, 401(k) retirement plan with employer match, 15 days of vacation to start, paid leave and 11+ paid holidays.
