Job Description
DEFINITION OF POSITION


Reports to Director of Education Services. Is responsible for establishing and/or maintaining community health and wellness outreach partnerships, programs and activities, including the Community Wellness Coalition. Will work collaboratively with area health facilities, businesses and community groups to establish health education programs, events and wellness assessments. Will create and present curriculum, course materials, and speaker presentations. Assists with departmental budget and outreach plan. May assist with teaching staff and community members cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) & First Aid using American Heart Association guidelines and standards. Provides appropriate feedback to students and corrects area(s) of inadequate performance and/or information tactfully. Uses principals of adult learning, but is able to adjust teaching methods to accommodate different levels of learning & learning styles, including adolescents and young children (ages 8-12). Communicates effectively with community members, class/event participants and education department staff. Maintains established organizational & departmental policies & procedures, quality improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Completes class rosters and returns course materials, evaluations and supplies to proper location. Collects class fee when necessary. Follows hospital dress code and presents self in a professional manner.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


Must be able to perform a variety of duties in a classroom or community setting, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure; handle frequent interruptions & questions without disruption to work flow; able to prioritize teaching tasks and re-prioritize throughout the class so complete instruction occurs as requested despite frequent interruptions; able to communicate effectively with all participants including healthcare professionals, community members and fellow staff members. Attends all mandatory inservices required by GSHCS, education department manager as well as those required by the American Heart Association.



  • EDUCATION


Required Bachelors Degree in a healthcare field, preferably health education.


Desired Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), RN, LPN or other healthcare professional education strongly preferred. Certified American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Instructor.


  • EXPERIENCE


Required Experience with community health education required. Experience working with community partnerships. Knowledge & experience with public speaking and various teaching methods.


Desired Experience with community partnerships focusing on health & wellness education. Experience &/or training with grant & program development strongly desired. English/Spanish bilingual (reading, writing and speaking) helpful. Experience creating presentations and course curriculum very helpful. Computer & PowerPoint knowledge desired.


  • EQUIPMENT/TOOLS /WORK AIDS


Working knowledge of computers, LCD projectors and other media equipment helpful. Able to operate TV/VCR/DVD player and other equipment required for classroom instruction.


  • SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS


Ability to teach and assist community with age-specific, cultural, physical, and psychosocial well-being. Knowledge of teaching methods, including adult learning modalities. Environmental factors subject to varying and unpredictable conditions when dealing with the public. Occasional standing/walking required. Able to lift up to 35 lbs. Ability to travel to various sites throughout the surrounding communities. Flexible hours.
