Community Development Specialist – $50,000 - $55,000 starting salary – Macon, Georgia

The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Community Development Specialist to join our team. Our ideal candidate will provide essential assistance to local governments in areas such as grant writing and administration, economic development, personnel management, effective governance, transportation, hazard mitigation, and community planning.


The ideal candidate will be a team-oriented individual who can engage effectively with coworkers and community members in the process of providing quality customer service. Candidates should possess a strong vision and desire for facilitating positive change that moves the region forward. A candidate must be able to address challenges with enthusiasm and positive energy that demonstrates a love for the work of growing and improving communities.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support local governments in the facilitation and creation of special projects, including housing needs assessments and economic development strategies.
  • Provide a range of technical assistance to local governments, including administration, research, project management, and the development of innovative solutions.
  • Collaborate with local elected and appointed officials to prepare and administer grant and loan applications for public infrastructure, solid waste, community and economic development, public safety, recreation, and other program areas.
  • Research potential grant and loan sources to find the best possible funding for projects.
  • Support local governments in developing and maintaining personnel policies, procedures, job descriptions, and pay plans.
  • Conduct research and develop policies and local legislation.
  • Create proposals/solicitations for work on various projects on behalf of local governments.

The Person

  • Functional knowledge of spreadsheets, databases, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of the day-to-day functions of local, state, and federal governments.
  • Ability to decipher federal and state regulations and instructions.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend professional journals, government regulations, reports, and business correspondences.
  • Ability to successfully work on multiple projects at one time.
  • Ability to read, manipulate, analyze, and interpret data from various sources.
  • Knowledge of grant programs and funding sources from public, private, and non-profit sectors.
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Public Policy, Urban Planning or a related field from an accredited college or university, and 1-2 years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
