The Public Affairs Division of VDSS is currently seeking a Summer Intern from June – August 2023. This Intern position will provide students an opportunity to combine their academic studies with on-the-job training and experience while completing their education. The internship program will support the mission of the agency and the career goals and interests of the intern.
The Public Affairs Division Intern will report to the Public Affairs Director and gain project-based work experience by:
- Collaborating with the division’s web, strategic communications and graphic design teams to support agency initiatives
- Being a thought partner in strategic discussions related to campaign development and various small and largescale project needs
- Curating content for diverse communication platforms and audiences
This position will also have the opportunity to learn from and work alongside the team to learn basic project management skills, participate in cross-functional teams, strengthen leadership and communication skills, and other duties as assigned that may enhance the learning experience.

Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to work up to 29 hours per week
- Rising junior, senior, or graduate student enrolled in an accredited university or college in good academic standing pursuing a major in Communications, English, Marketing, Digital Strategy, Web Development or related area
- GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) style writing
- Experience in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite with ability to learn new software systems
- Ability to work the entire duration of the internship program, June 19, 2023 – August 25, 2023
- Knowledge of core functional areas related to a Communications, Marketing, Digital Strategy or Web Development degree
- Self-motivated and driven team player with a focus on seeing solutions rather than problems, effectively prioritizing and executing tasks
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
- High attention to detail, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Self-driven and shows initiative
- Leadership role within a professional organization, or student chapter
- Ability to design and develop graphic materials for use on web pages, microsites and internal communications
- Exhibits a commitment to self-development
- UX and content-minded; interest/experience developing new content portals and applications to solve content, communications and organizational needs
- Experience using content management systems and email marketing platforms
- Strong planning, organizational, and time management skills
- Innovative and able to recommend and implement new concepts and ideas
- Strong writer with a passion for storytelling, marketing and content strategy
