    SCOPE OF POSITION
    The Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) is responsible for the expert completion of a wide range of duties designed to service in-house, outpatient and outreach clients/customers. He/she is responsible for the pre-analytical section of the laboratory as approved by the State of Tennessee Medical Laboratory Licensing Board, where lab specimens are received and processed. This position is responsible for accessioning all specimens delivered to the laboratory. Responsibilities include but may not be limited to the inspection of incoming specimens to assure all have been properly collected and labeled; the review of accompanying outpatient orders and billing information for accuracy and completion; and the registration and order entry of appropriate non-patient orders into the laboratory information system. If any of the aforementioned information is incomplete, the technician follows through persistently with inquiries to the client until all documentation is complete. The role of this position also includes serving as a resource for information requests and problem solving for our clients/customers.
    The Clinical Laboratory Technician is responsible for the section of the laboratory that processes and packages all specimens referred to laboratories outside of the hospital. At times he/she must be able to research rare and/or uncommon laboratory testing performed at remote locations throughout the nation. This will involve obtaining specimen collection information, communicating said information to a physician or patient care provider, as well as preparing and following through with any special handling/shipping procedures in a timely manner.
    He/she will be expected to have knowledge of available testing for interactions he/she will have with clients, physicians, nurses, and reference laboratories. This information will include but not be limited to how to order a specific test, specimen collection requirements, testing turnaround time, results and other miscellaneous information. In this role, the highest degree of accountability is required as errors can impact patient care negatively. He/she is responsible for the communication via fax or telephone of outpatient STAT requested results.
    Responsibilities may include, but not limited to, waivered/exempt laboratory testing (Bedside Glucose, Bleeding Times, Occult Blood, etc) including quality control checks, instrument/testing prep and reagent preparations. Daily temperature checks, dispensing and receiving of pathology body fluid and tissue specimen processing and distribution to histology are also responsibilities.

    EDUCATION EXPERIENCE
    One year of healthcare or laboratory experience preferred. Familiarity with medical terminology is required. Must be able to follow written and verbal instruction, demonstrate critical thinking skills, and have initiative and sound judgment. Requires computer literacy. Training can be provided on laboratory computer system as related to processing of laboratory specimens.
